FORT MYERS, Fla. – Maddy Stark and Emily Prehoda limited their opponents to a combined six hits and struck out nine hitters in the Kenyon Ladies softball doubleheader sweep on Tuesday afternoon. The Ladies defeated Clark University, 5-2, before Prehoda tossed a two-hit gem against Eastern Nazarene College to close out the day with a 7-0 victory.
The Ladies (3-1) began the day against the Clark Cougars, where Stark tossed the first of two complete games on the day. She also scored the first run of the game in the top of the first after leading off with a single up the middle and later coming around to score after Prehoda dropped a single into left field.
Kenyon later peppered the middle of the playing field with four consecutive singles up the middle from the fourth through seventh spots in the lineup. Toni Miller's single to complete the streak scored Chelsea Delaney before Liz Paterra painted the left field line for the team's fifth straight base hit to score the team's third run of the inning. After three, the Ladies held a 4-1 lead and added their fifth and final run in the fourth after a Clark error kept the inning alive.
Stark (2-0) threw all seven innings for her second win in as many days. She surrendered only four hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out four. The sophomore cruised through the final three innings, retiring the side in order three straight times to close out the game.
In her start in Tuesday's second game of the doubleheader against the Eastern Nazarene Crusaders, Prehoda had five runs of support before making it into the circle. Delaney put the Ladies on the board with a RBI single through the left side and was followed by the pitcher who helped her own cause with a two-run double down the left field line. After knocking out Crusader starting pitcher Jamie Block, Miller finished the big inning with a two-run single to right center field, extending Kenyon's lead to five.
Jamie Samuel increased that lead to six runs the very next inning with an RBI double, giving Prehoda more than enough support for the win in the senior's first start of the season.
Prehoda (1-0) retired the first seven ENC hitters she faced, including three of her five total strikeouts. She worked through trouble in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings after walks put runners in scoring position but exited unscathed before retiring the Crusaders in order to end the game in the seventh.
Offensively, Miller led the Ladies in game two, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. She was one of three Ladies to tally a pair of RBIs, joining teammates Delaney and Prehoda. Kenyon improves to 3-1 through two days at the Gene Cusic Classic. The team will play their third doubleheader in as many days against Penn State-Behrend College at 9 a.m. and take on Clark in a rematch of Tuesday's game at 11 a.m. They will play at the Lee County Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Florida.
