FORT MYERS, Fla. – Chelsea Delaney played the heroine role twice in one game when in back-to-back at bats she turned in clutch performances in the Kenyon Ladies' first of two wins Thursday. Delaney turned in the game-tying run to push the Ladies' matchup with the Worchester Polytechnic Institute Engineers into extra innings before coming up with the game-winning hit in the ninth. Kenyon swept the day's events with a run-rule win over Olivet College (MI) in the following contest.
Both the WPI and Kenyon offenses were stagnant through the first four innings of play. Maddy Stark, however, sent the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth inning over the left center field fence to break the scoreless tie.
WPI answered with two runs in the top half of the fifth, but Delaney did her part in evening the score with her first of two run-scoring base hits. Her double in the bottom of the seventh helped Kenyon extend life to the game, but it was not the last time her number would be called in a big moment.
Both teams swapped runs in the first of two extra innings played. Toni Miller kept Kenyon alive tying the game at eight with a base knock the opposite way before leaving two runners on, one in scoring position. Jamie Samuel held the Engineers scoreless in the ninth, sitting down WPI in order.
In the bottom of the ninth, Delaney came to the plate with runners on second and third. The sophomore then ripped a liner into left, allowing the game-winning run to score and giving Kenyon a 6-5 decision for its fifth win of the season.
Delaney was one of four Ladies to register multiple hits, but led the team with two RBI--the biggest two of the game.
Stark not only homered, but started the game in the circle and threw six innings, allowing two runs on six hits in a no-decision. Senior Samuel (1-0) earned the win by completing the final two innings in her first pitching action of the season.
Game two featured an excess of offense in the opening frame, but only Kenyon continued that trend through the duration of the shortened contest. The Ladies accelerated out to an early lead over Olivet, spotting starting pitcher Emily Prehoda five runs in the first inning. Delaney recorded her third RBI of the day with a run-scoring single on a hot shot to short before Lindsey Susolik, Liz Paterra, and Danielle Elizarraraz all plated additional runs in consecutive at-bats.
Olivet responded with three runs after their first three hitters led the inning off with singles and a pair of fielder's choices helped drive in the remaining runs.
Kenyon's offense continued to roll, having scored at least once in each of its first five trips to the plate. The Ladies strengthened their lead to six runs in the top of the third when the bottom of the lineup came through with a trio of hits. That surge was capped by Elizarraraz's two-run double to right center field.
Kenyon added three more runs in the fourth after the same bottom part of the lineup again got on base and came around to score, courtesy of Elizarraraz's second two-RBI double of the game.
Prehoda (2-0) kept the Comets off of the board in the final two innings to help end the game at 13-4 in the fifth inning.
Delaney finished tied for the team high with four hits on the day. She shared that title with Susolik and Paterra. Elizarraraz posted team best five RBI on the day.
The Ladies converted their second sweep of the young season after doing so two days ago against Clark University and Eastern Nazarene College. They are now 6-2 heading into Saturday's doubleheader against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) and Bridgewater State University.
