Defenses rise to occasion in rivalry game

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College Lords defense stood tall Wednesday and battled the No. 13-ranked Denison University Big Red toe-to-toe in the rivals' annual battle for the Thomsen-Heiser Trophy. The Big Red defense was equally impressive and its offense finally broke through in the fourth quarter to secure a 6-3 win.

Denison (9-2, 4-0 NCAC) came into the game averaging 13.5 goals per game. The Lords' defense, and freshman goalkeeper Patrick Shevelson in particular, held the Big Red to less than half that output. Shevelson made a few jaw-dropping saves to keep the Lords in the game and the starting defensive unit of Rob Wennemer, Jack Vallis, Brian Andrews, and Ben Grindle-deGraaf did the rest.

The Big Red opened a slim 2-0 lead after the first quarter of play and both teams notched a goal in the second quarter to give Denison a 3-1 advantage at the break. Kenyon's lone goal in those first 30 minutes of action came from freshman Trey Trudell, who was assisted by senior Mackie Avis.

Within the first 31 seconds of the third quarter, the Lords struck again. Sophomore Fritz Waine assisted classmate Nicky Lenard to bring the Kenyon men within one goal of the Big Red. That turned out to be the only score of the quarter and Denison took a 3-2 lead into the fourth and final frame.

Three different players ended up scoring for Denison in the fourth quarter. The one that matter most, however, was Will Koontz's man-up tally at the 11:15 mark. That goal held up as the game-winner. Waine netted Kenyon's final score of the day, but it came with just a little more than a minute to play and the Lords trailing 6-2.

Shevelson wound up making 14 saves for the second-straight game. He now has 76 saves on the season and a stellar 6.43 goals against average.

Kenyon (6-6, 2-2 NCAC) will try to get back on track Saturday when it heads to Hiram College to take on the Terriers at 1 p.m.
