MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Kenyon College softball team was two outs away from a sweep over the Allegheny College Gators before one swing turned the tide of Sunday's doubleheader. After winning game one, 10-6, the Ladies fell by way of a walk-off home run in their 7-6 loss in game two. Jamie Samuel displayed a near-perfect day from the plate in the split.
After Maddy Stark pitched her way toward her 12th win of the season in game one, the Ladies battled with the Gators in back-and-forth fashion before taking a one-run lead into the last half of the seventh inning. Kenyon broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the inning when Chelsea Delaney recorded a double to the left center field gap, plating Samuel from second base. Samuel then took to the rubber for her fifth inning of relief work and after retired the opening batter, surrendered a one-out double to Belle Mazurik prior to Sadie Stuart ending the game with a two-run home run to left field. Samuel (1-2) took the loss in the 7-6 decision that spoiled the Ladies' chance at a day sweep.
Samuel went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate in game two and recorded her second home run of the season in the loss. Emily Prehoda notched her third home run of the season with a two-run blast in the third inning of the nightcap to help Kenyon take a 4-2 lead.
In addition to her four-hit game in game two, Samuel went 3-for-4 in the Ladies' game-one victory with a trio of singles to add to an incredible line for the day. She ended Sunday's action with a 7-for-8 day at the plate and five runs batted in.
The Ladies took game one by a 10-6 score with six of their runs coming in the final two stanzas. Trailing 5-4 heading into the sixth inning, Stark tied the game with a RBI single through the middle of the infield before Lindsey Susolik helped the Ladies take a 7-5 lead. Meredith Williams finished off a three-hit day with a run-scoring single in the seventh, capped off by Samuel's two-RBI single to help pad the lead.
Stark (12-2) earned the complete-game win after allowing five runs on six hits in the victory.
Kenyon (18-11) will retake the field on Saturday, April 20 on the road against the College of Wooster for a doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m.
