WOOSTER, Ohio – Goals were hard to come by Wednesday night at The College of Wooster and the Kenyon College Lords lacrosse team did not come up with enough of them. The host Fighting Scots put together a late, five-goal run and handed the Lords a 7-5 North Coast Athletic Conference loss.
Neither offense was afforded much space to work with throughout the first two quarters of play. Kenyon (7-7, 3-3 NCAC) managed just 14 shots in the first half. Wooster fired off 24, but most of them were off target and nearly every one that was on target was saved by Kenyon goalkeeper Patrick Shevelson.
The Fighting Scots (9-4, 4-2 NCAC) were, however, able to sneak one first-half shot by Shevelson. With 2:37 left in the first quarter, Wooster's Tom Herold registered the first goal of the game. It was also the only goal scored by either team in the first half of play.
The Lords seemingly made the proper adjustments during halftime and proceeded to rattle off three straight goals in a matter of six minutes. Junior
Will Lowe served up assists to sophomores Nicky Lenard and
Fritz Waine.
Chris King, another junior, then popped in an unassisted goal and the Lords held a 3-1 lead with 9:06 showing on the third-quarter clock.
While Kenyon got its offense humming, Wooster went on to do the same. The Fighting Scots scored the last goal of the third quarter and then the first four goals of the fourth quarter to break open the game with a 6-3 advantage.
Down the stretch, Kenyon twice pulled within two goals of Wooster, but could get no closer. The final two tallies posted by the Lords came from Lowe and senior
Chris Pappalardo. The two also assisted each other on those goals.
Shevelson remained busy in front of the Lords' cage throughout the game. Wooster ended up out-shooting Kenyon, 51-32, but Shevelson, who wound up with a season-high 21 saves, kept the Lords in the contest.
For Wooster, goalkeeper Matt Magoon made 13 saves, while Herold and Matt Ranck both finished with two goals and an assist.
