GRANVILLE, Ohio – Similar to the game they played just two weeks ago, the Kenyon College and Denison University men's lacrosse teams locked up in a defensive struggle during Tuesday night's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal contest. Denison was able to generate a little more offense, however, and advanced with an 8-2 victory.
The loss for the Lords finalized their team record at 8-8. Denison, the No. 13-ranked team in the nation, improved to 13-2 and will host Ohio Wesleyan University in Saturday's NCAC Tournament championship. The winner of that game earns the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Kenyon got off to the start it wanted. Despite facing 13 shots from Denison in the first quarter, the Lords managed to take a 1-0 lead into the second quarter. The Kenyon goal came from sophomore
Fritz Waine. It hit net with only one second left in the quarter and it was set up by freshman Trey Trudell.
The Lords picked up one more goal in the second stanza, but it was preceded and followed by two tallies for the Big Red, who went into halftime with a slim 4-2 advantage. Kenyon's second and final goal of the game came also came from Waine, who concluded the season with a total of seven goals.
Denison outshot Kenyon 41-19, but freshman goalkeeper Patrick Shevelson did whatever he could to keep the Lords in the game and that included making 18 saves. That total gave Shevelson 125 saves on the season and a 6.00 goals against average, the second-best single-season mark in program history.
The Big Red had six different players score goals. Blair Farinholt and Will Koontz both scored twice.
