GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team accomplished two major feats on Wednesday afternoon, first defeating their rivals the Denison University Big Red and secondly clinching the No. 2 seed in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. The Ladies broke away in the second half while complementing another strong offensive performance with sound defense in their 15-10 victory.
The Ladies rolled out of halftime with an 8-5 lead, but Denison closed the gap to a single goal after Lizzy Pellicane and Erin Keller scored back-to-back goals. That only stirred the bee hive and started a chain of five unanswered goals by the Ladies, led by Jane Symmes. Amy Morgan scored the first goal of that five-goal run, but Symmes added to the rally by scoring four of the next five to extend Kenyon's lead to 13-7. Symmes carved out five goals to lead both squads, doing so on six shot attempts. She now has 35 goals on the season, second among Ladies scorers.
The rally proved to be too much for the Big Red to overcome as both teams swapped goals until the very end, leading to a 15-10 final count. Meredith Bentsen made a season-high 12 saves against Denison, marking the second time this season she has made 10 or more stops in a contest.
Leah Sack added to her record-setting assist totals with six more helpers in the win and led the Ladies with seven points against the Big Red. She also scored a goal on her lone shot of the game. Emily Nichols and Morgan ended the game with three goals scored, each.
Kenyon dominated in draw controls, besting Denison 18-9 in that category. Symmes collected 11 of the Ladies' 18 draw controls. Both teams put up equal amounts of shots (30), ground balls (18), and were comparable in the turnover category.
The win puts Kenyon at 10-2 overall and 6-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. It also puts the Ladies into the conference tournament for the first time since 2010, when they advanced to the championship round and went on to defeat the Fighting Scots in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Ladies will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, April 27 at DePauw University (4-6, 1-5 NCAC). That match is set to begin at 12 p.m.
