DELAWARE, Ohio – Pitchers stole the show Saturday as the Kenyon College Ladies softball team split a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader with the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops. Kenyon posted a 4-0 win in game one, but Ohio Wesleyan held on for a 1-0 win in game two.
Sophomore
Maddy Stark took care of business in the pitchers circle for Kenyon. She threw all seven innings of game one and gave up just three hits in what was her third shutout of the season. She hit one batter, walked two, struck out five, and ran her personal season record to 11-1.
In the top of the third inning, senior
Jamie Samuel provided Stark with all the run support she would need. With one out and runners on first and second, Samuel doubled to left field to give the Ladies a 2-0 lead. The Ladies tacked on one more run in each of the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, it was Lindsey Susolik who drew a bases-loaded walk and in the sixth it was Stark who delivered a run-scoring double. Stark ended up going 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and that one RBI.
In game two, Stark trotted right back out to the pitching rubber and put together another quality start. This time around she hurled six innings while giving up just four hits and no walks. She fanned three batters and dropped her season earned run average to 1.69. Throughout the two-game set, Ohio Wesleyan batters managed to hit just .156 off Stark.
Unlike the first game, the Kenyon offense could not provide Stark with any run support. Ohio Wesleyan pitcher Amanda Barker one-upped Stark by going the distance in a three-hit shutout. Samuels,
Chelsea Delaney, and
Emily Prehoda were the only Ladies to manage a hit off Barker. All three hits were singles and Kenyon never got a runner past second base.
The only run scored in game two came in the bottom of the third inning. Ohio Wesleyan's Jessica Gooden led things off with a double, the only extra-base hit allowed by Stark all day. Gooden then moved to third on a groundout and scored on another groundout.
The split moves Kenyon's records to 16-9 overall and 4-2 in the NCAC. The Ladies' 16 wins are the most in one season since the 2010 team went 18-18. In the other dugout, the Battling Bishops moved their records to 10-10 overall and 3-3 in NCAC play.
