MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Kenyon College Lords football team opened the 2013 season with a big catch in enemy waters. Saturday at Frank B. Fuhrer Field, the Lords hauled in an Allegheny College Gators team that didn't hold up its end of the battle during a 37-7 extermination.

The Lords (1-0) scored on their first three possessions of the game and never looked back. Both the offense and defense were clicking for Kenyon, which racked up 439 yards of offense and held Allegheny (0-1) to 246 yards.

After stopping the Gators offense on a three-and-out to open the game, Kenyon carved up the Allegheny defense with a 14-play, 88-yard, season-opening drive that ended with a Blake Calcei touchdown run. The drive chomped 6:21 off the clock and saw Calcei take a direct snap on the final play. After collecting the snap, Calcei burst through the right side for the two-yard touchdown.

Kenyon's next drive featured the air attack. Sophomore quarterback Jake Bates completed four passes in the drive with the final one being a 39-yard touchdown strike to freshman Brian Hunca. That ended the first quarter of play with the Lords in front, 14-0.

In the second quarter, Kenyon got one more touchdown from Calcei. Again on a direct snap, Calcei scored from one yard out, this time running to the left side. The score was set up by an Allegheny fumble at midfield. Quarterback Kyle Smith lost the handle on the ball and senior defensive lineman Cam Ventling was there to scoop it up. It was one of three turnovers for the Gators, who found themselves bogged down by a 22-0 halftime deficit.

Another one of those Allegheny turnovers led to the Lords' next score. With the Gators marching down the field, quarterback Jon Nigro was chased out of the pocket by senior linebacker Kolin Sullivan. On the run, Nigro put a pass up from grabs in the end zone, where sophomore Kye Duren picked it off. Duren handed the ball over to the offense, which needed just one play—a Brandon January 80-yard touchdown run down the right sideline. Another two-point conversion boosted Kenyon to an insurmountable 30-0 lead.

The only score Allegheny could muster came on a ball that was almost intercepted. With 5:25 left in the third quarter, Nigro launched another pass that ended up going in and out of a Kenyon defender's hands. On the way out, it fell into the paws of Andrew Niklaus, who carried it to the end zone for a 52-yard score.

Unfazed, Kenyon went back to work on the ground using a combination of sophomore Casey Beaudouin and January, a junior, to piece together another scoring drive, which ended with a Max Boyd 12-yard TD toss to Beaudouin.

Beaudouin finished with 72 yards on 18 carries and January tacked on 143 yards on ten carries as the Lords piled up a total of 253 rushing yards. In the air, Bates was 8-of-10 for 153 yards before being replaced by Boyd. Top targets were Nick Gasbarro, Hunca, and freshman Jibri McLean. Gasbarro, a junior, had four catches for 42 yards, Hunca had two for 60, and McLean had two for 58 yards.

Defensively, Sullivan and fellow senior linebacker Reed Franklin made a team-best nine tackles. Brad Couts and David Espey added eight tackles each. Sophomore defensive back Alexander McQuiston tacked on another five tackles and accounted for the Lords' third forced turnover, an interception that started the fourth quarter.
