GAMBIER, Ohio – Junior Fritz Waine scored three times Saturday and the Kenyon College Lords lacrosse team held off Albion College for a season-opening 7-6 win at McBride Field.

Waine didn't waste any time in getting right to work. He scored the Lords' first two goals, one on his own and the other being assisted by sophomore Phil Alimam. Albion got one of those goals back during a man-up situation, but Kenyon (1-0) marched into the second quarter with a 2-1 lead.

The Britons then tied things up early in the second quarter with a goal from Dominic Harper. Even though the game was closely contested throughout, the 2-2 tie would be as close as Albion would get to a lead. Kenyon stormed back with three straight goals to close out the half. Freshman Alex Lopez and sophomore Trey Trudell sandwiched Waine's third goal of the game and pushed Kenyon in front by a 5-2 count.

Waine was kept off the board in the second half, but Nicky Lenard, another Kenyon junior, tallied the only two goals the Lords would need. Albion (1-1) scored the first two goals of the third quarter to pull within one point again, but the rest of the way the teams traded goals with Kenyon remaining in front. Lenard netted his first score off an assist from Trudell, helping to offset a three-goal, third-quarter spurt from the Britons.

Senior Caleb Florence assisted on Lenard's other goal, which came about the midway mark of the fourth quarter and held up as the game-winner. Albion scored the game's final goal with 4:15 still left on the clock. During the play, the Britons were also given another man-up situation when Kenyon was flagged for an illegal body check. With the game on the line, the Lords defense stood tall and survived the two-minute man-down situation. In all, the Kenyon men gave up just one goal in five Albion extra-man opportunities.

Sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Shevelson, coming off a stellar freshman campaign, chalked up eight saves to earn the win between the pipes. He was less busy than his counterpart, Kyle Formanczyk, who faced 40 Kenyon shots and made 11 saves.
