SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Kenyon College men's lacrosse team dug itself a hole early in Sunday's non-conference contest against the host Sewanee Tigers. The Lords did everything they could to battle back in the second half, but ended up running out of time and suffered an 8-7 loss.
Sewanee (2-1) used the play of Matthew Stiefel and Michael Morris to build an early lead. Stiefel scored one goal and assisted on another to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage after one quarter of play. Morris then recorded two assists and a goal in the second quarter to put Sewanee ahead 5-1 at the break.
The Tigers outshot Kenyon 21-14 in the first half and held the Lords to just the one goal, which was scored by junior
Nick Lenard and set up by sophomore
Trey Trudell. Things changed quickly, however, in the second half as Kenyon blitzed the Tigers with three straight scores to start the third quarter. Senior
Zach Arlia fired in the first of the three and freshman
Alex Lopez rang up the next two to pull the Lords within one goal.
Sewanee managed to get one of those goals back before the quarter closed. That set the stage for a fourth quarter that saw the two teams trade goals until the clock ran out.
Phil Alimam scored the first of the quarter to make it 6-5. Lenard then answered each of the next two Tigers' goals to make it 7-6 and 8-7. That final Kenyon goal hit twine with 3:49 still remaining in the game.
Over those last few minutes, Kenyon peppered the Sewanee cage, but just could not net the equalizer. After
Holden Richards won the final face-off, the Lords unleashed six shots at the Tigers' cage. Four of those shots sailed wide of the net and the other two were blocked.
The Lords (2-1) wound up out-shooting the Tigers 27-15 in the second half and 41-36 for the game. Richards won 11-of-17 face-offs, while goalkeeper
Patrick Shevelson notched 11 saves and even recorded an assist on Lenard's third and final goal.
