GAMBIER, Ohio – With 13 seconds left in Saturday's conference-opening game at McBride Field, Kenyon College junior Fritz Waine unleashed a shot that hit the back of the Wittenberg University net and propelled the Lords lacrosse team to a 6-5 victory over the Tigers.

The goal was Waine's third of the game and it was set up by classmate Pat Kim, who delivered a pass to his left where Waine collected it and finished the job. The goal was not only a game-winner, but improved Kenyon's records to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. On the other side of the field, Wittenberg slid to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in the NCAC.

As the final score indicated, the game was a defensive struggle with no team scoring more than two goals in any one quarter. Kenyon got the early jump and used tallies from Waine and Justin Coleman to close out the first quarter with a 2-1 lead. Wittenberg then outscored Kenyon 2-0 in the second quarter, but the Lords returned the favor in the third with goals from Kim and Zach Arlia. That output gave Kim a goal and two assists on the day and pushed Kenyon out to a 4-3 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

In the fourth quarter, momentum continued to waver as Wittenberg's Fuss brothers, Thomas and Andrew, registered goals that put the Tigers on top, 5-4, with 10:16 remaining. Less than two minutes later, Waine scooped up a loose ball in front of the Tigers' cage and pumped in the equalizer.

With the score tied and time ticking away, each possession became more and more important over the last few minutes and each team burned through its allotted timeouts to make sure everything was in order. After Wittenberg called its final timeout, Sean Kelleher uncorked a low shot from about ten yards out. Kenyon keeper Patrick Shevelson quickly got in position and scooped it, making the most important of his eight saves throughout the game.

Kenyon then marched up the field and set the stage for Waine's dramatic goal. Wittenberg did obtain possession after the final face-off, but the Tigers didn't get much of a look and Jack Fraser jumped up to block a shot before it got anywhere near the net.

Like the scoreboard, most of this game's numbers were close. Kenyon, however, did hold a slight edge in shots (28-24), groundballs (30-24), and face-offs won (9-5). Due to the defensive nature of the game, neither team fared well in man-up situations. Kenyon was 1-for-6 and Wittenberg was 1-for-5.

The Lords, now winners in three of their last four games, will remain at home Wednesday and host the Otterbein University Cardinals in a non-conference contest that will start at 4 p.m.
