GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Kenyon College softball team had a rough go of it in Sunday's doubleheader against DePauw University. The Ladies' bats were kept quiet as they were handed a pair of shutout losses by the Tigers, 4-0 and 3-0.
DePauw (11-9, 2-0 NCAC) tagged Maddy Stark (7-3) for one run in the first and second innings to jump on the Ladies early. Both leadoff hitters in each frame reached base and later scored to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Danielle Elizarraraz helped keep the lead at just two after doubling up the Tigers' Grace Hendrickson at the plate, firing a strike to Toni Miller at the plate to nail her on a tag attempt.
The Ladies (14-6, 0-2 NCAC) threatened throughout the course of game one, but could not bring around any of the six runners they put in scoring position. Kahla Nolan allowed just four hits and struck out five Ladies to keep them off of the board in her seventh win of the season.
DePauw added two more runs in the fifth inning, both with two outs, when the middle of the Tigers' lineup posted three consecutive doubles to push home their third and fourth runs. The Ladies were retired in order in the seventh, finalizing a 4-0 score.
The Ladies' fortunes did not turn around in game two as they were held to just five hits without scoring a run. Opportunities were again present, but another four runners were left in scoring position.
Sylvie Thomas (7-3) did her best to keep the Tigers at bay, allowing just five hits in her six innings of work, but the freshman surrendered four walks which led to two runs. DePauw scored in the opening frame when a fielding error by Liz Paterra allowed two runs to score, both reached base via a walk.
DePauw added another run in the third which served more than enough to lead to Sunday's sweep.
Lindsey Susolik posted three of Kenyon's nine combined hits on the day, including two in game one.
Kenyon will turn around and head to Hiram College on Tuesday for a pair against the Terriers, set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
