FORT MYERS, Fla. – As part of the Kenyon College softball team's pair of wins at the Gene Cusic Classic on Tuesday,
Sylvie Thomas and
Maddy Stark ruled the circle in both of the Ladies' wins. Kenyon shut out both Northland College and St. John Fisher College by a combined score of 10-0 to improve their overall recorded to an unblemished 4-0.
Northland (0-3) and St. John Fisher (3-1) combined for nine hits between both games against the Ladies' dynamic duo of Maddy Stark (2-0) and Sylvie Thomas (2-0). Thomas opened the day with a five-hitter against Northland while striking out eight LumberJills and walking none. Stark surrendered just four hits and equaled her freshman teammate in strikeouts. Both earned their second wins of the season.
In the day's opener against Northland, Liz Paterra hit a two-out, two-RBI single to drive home Jane Ghublikian and Meredith Williams in the bottom of the second inning. The Ladies added a third run the following inning after the Jills committed a pair of errors which eventually led to a 3-0 score.
In the fifth, Williams came around to score after stealing second and then scored from second following Molly O'Connor's single up the middle. Paterra then cleared the bases with a run-scoring triple to right-center field. With the score 5-0, the Ladies added one more run in the sixth behind an RBI single by Lindsey Susolik. Thomas put the Jills lineup down in order for the third time in the seventh inning to earn the win.
Against St. John Fisher, the Ladies tacked on a run during its first trip to the plate. Kenyon loaded the bases with singles by Stark and Danielle Elizarraraz plus a walk to Chelsea Delaney. Ghublikian, who was elevated to the cleanup spot of the Ladies' order, hit a single to the third-base side to put Kenyon up, 1-0.
The offensive assault continued in the third when Delaney launched a double to center field, putting runners at second and third. Ghublikian tallied her second RBI of the game with a single to center, plating Elizarraraz. Pinch runner Molly Goolman scored from third when Toni Miller lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, giving the Ladies a three-run lead. Kenyon added one more run the following inning when Stark hit a line drive to right field that served as a sacrifice to score Williams from third.
Stark did the rest from the circle, keeping the Cardinals off of the bases in the fifth and sixth. She took a two-hitter into the seventh inning before St. John Fisher put together two base hits. On the second hit, recorded by Jessica D'Angelo, Ghublikian came up firing and nailed the lead runner at second for the first out of the inning. Stark stranded two runners after forcing Hannah Freyer to fly out to end the game.
On the day, Ghublikian went a combined 4-for-6 at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs. Williams went 3-for-6 and scored three times. Paterra, Elizarraraz, and O'Connor all had multiple hit days, as well.
The Ladies (4-0) continue their run of eight games in four days on Wednesday morning against Newbury College at 11 a.m. at the Cape Coral Sports Complex. In the second part of the day's doubleheader, they will take on Dominican University (Ill.) at 1 p.m. Live stats will be provided for each game.
