CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Sophomore
Molly O'Connor's grand slam in the second inning of game one set the tone Wednesday for a third-straight doubleheader sweep for the Kenyon College softball team. A 10-2 win over Newbury College and a 1-0 triumph over Dominican University at the Cape Coral Sports Complex ran the Ladies' record to a perfect 6-0 on the third day of the Gene Cusic Classic.
Kenyon was given a head start in game one because Newbury starting pitcher Alexa Mummery could not hit her spots. She walked four batters and hit another, allowing Kenyon to race out to a 2-0 lead after one inning.
Newbury then sent Olivia Kenyon out to the mound to replace Mummery, but she couldn't halt the Kenyon offense either.
Maddy Stark started things out for the Ladies by reaching base via error. A couple of outs later, Stark waltzed home after
Jane Ghublikian laced a double to left center.
Lindsey Susolik then drew a walk and
Meredith Williams crammed the bases with a bunt single. That set the stage for O'Connor, who cleared the bases with her first career home run, a shot that found a spot in the grass behind the left field wall and gave Kenyon an 8-0 lead.
O'Connor, who pushed a run home with a walk in the first inning, finished the game with five RBI.
Danielle Elizarraraz was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Stark and Ghublikian each scored twice and Susolik notched a couple of RBI.
On the mound,
Sylvie Thomas benefitted from all the run support and cruised to her third win of the season. She only had to pitch four innings due to the eight-run mercy rule. In that short time, she yielded four hits and two earned runs. She also struck out two batters.
In game two, Stark took the mound for the Ladies and continued to look unbeatable. She worked all seven innings, didn't give up a run, and allowed just four hits. She didn't walk a batter and she struck out eight. On the season, Stark is now 3-0 and has not given up an earned run in 21 innings pitched. She's also averaging one strikeout per inning.
Stark only needed to work out of one serious jam against Dominican. In the top of the sixth inning, the Stars used an error, a sacrifice, and a single to put runners on second and third with just one out. Stark then struck out Dominican's clean-up hitter and got the next batter to pop up to first base.
Dominican threatened again in the seventh, but Kenyon catcher
Toni Miller gunned down a would-be base stealer to give the Stark and the Ladies' defense a lift.
Game two's lone run crossed the plate in the second inning. Ghublikian led things off with a single. She was sacrifice to second and moved to third on a single from Miller. Susolik then ripped a double to plate what would hold up as the winning run.
Kenyon's 6-0 start to the season is the best in program history. The Ladies will try to keep it going Thursday with games against Alverno and Edgewood colleges.
