FORT MYERS, Fla. -- It took extra innings, but Bridgewater State University managed to deal the Kenyon College softball team its first loss of the season. The Bears used two runs in the top of the ninth inning Saturday morning to prevail, 3-2. Kenyon bounced back in its second game of the day, defeating Salem State University, 7-5.

The Ladies (8-1) took charge early against Bridgewater. Sophomore Danielle Elizarraraz got aboard thanks to a Bears' error. Jane Ghublikian then doubled down the left field line, moving Elizarraraz to third. Chelsea Delaney walked to load the bases and junior Toni Miller moved the runners up, scoring Elizarraraz, on another Bridgewater error.

From that point on the offenses were held in check, however, Bridgewater did manage to score the tying run in the third inning. The Bears used a used two singles and a sacrifice bunt to get Tara McCann around the bases to square things up a 1-1.

Kenyon starting pitcher, Maddy Stark turned in another fine performance, but was strapped with her first loss of the season after giving up two runs in the top of the ninth inning. Stark quickly got the Ladies out of the eighth inning and then struck out the first two batters in the ninth. Bridgewater stopped the momentum by lacing back-to-back doubles, scoring two runs, and moving ahead 3-1.

The Ladies got one run back on a sacrifice fly from Miller, but that was the end of the line. Stark was the only Kenyon player with multiple hits, as the Ladies were held to just five by Bridgewater pitcher Amber White. Stark allowed just five hits, too. Two of the three runs she gave up were earned. She walked only one and struck out 13.

Stark made another appearance in game two against Salem. As freshman starter Sylvie Thomas grew tired, Stark came on in relief and pitched the final two innings to earn her first save. In those two innings, she did not yield a hit and she fanned three, giving her 16 strikeouts on the day.

Thomas threw the first five innings to get the win and improved her pitching record to 4-0. She struck out four and gave up five earned runs on eight hits and a walk.

At the plate, the Ladies managed seven hits, two coming off the bat of sophomore Molly O'Connor. She belted key hits in the first and fifth innings. She capped off a four-run first inning for the Ladies by stroking a two-out, two-run double to center field. In the fifth, with Kenyon now leading by just one run (5-4), O'Connor crushed another double. This one traveled down the right field line and put the Kenyon women ahead with a much more comfortable 7-4 margin.

Elizarraraz and Miller both scored twice in game two. Miller and Stark accounted for the other two RBI for the Ladies, who never trailed in the finale.

The Ladies will return to the diamond Sunday for two more games. They take on Franklin and Marshall at 1 p.m. and then battle Stevens Institute of Technology at 3 p.m.
