HIRAM, Ohio  – The Kenyon College softball team continued to sport troubles at the plate, falling twice to Hiram College on Sunday afternoon. The Ladies fell to 2-8 in North Coast Athletic Conference play after 4-3 and 3-2 losses to the Terriers at Herndon Field. Lindsey Susolik led the Ladies with three hits and two RBIs.
Susolik served as the spark to the Ladies' offense, which held an early lead over the Terriers (9-13, 4-4 NCAC) in game one. The junior plated two runs in the first inning with a double to right field, scoring Maddy Stark and Jane Ghublikian.
Stark did her part on the mound through three innings, shutting the side down in order in each frame. Jessica Wahl then disrupted the flow with a game-tying, two-run home run to left field. Brittany Zajac then gave the Terriers the lead with her run-scoring double to left.
The Ladies (17-13, 2-8 NCAC) retook the lead after the turn of the inning after Haley Howard led the top of the fifth inning off with a double and later scored following Stark's two-bagger to the right center field gap.
The lead did not last long after the Terriers capitalized on two errors in the field to score the eventual go-ahead run. The Ladies were unable to get a runner past first base in either of their final two at bats, leading to a 4-3 defeat.
Game two did not fare any better for the Ladies after being held to just two runs on five hits in game two. They could only muster one base knock through five innings, while Hiram squeezed out a single run in the first, fourth, and sixth innings against Stark (9-8).
Kenyon's bats awoke in the seventh inning but it was too little, too late. Molly O'Connor belted her third home run of the year, a solo shot over the left center field fence, to cut into the lead. Liz Paterra singled and later scored from third when Susolik drew a bases-loaded walk, making for a one run game. With the score 3-2, the Ladies were down to their last out, but Chelsea Delaney grounded to third where the game-ending putout was made.
While Susolik served as the bright spot for the Ladies lineup by finishing the set 3-for-5 with a pair of walks and RBIs at the plate, Ghublikian's nine-game hitting streak was snapped after she went hitless in game one.
Kenyon will close up its six-game road game streak with rival Denison University on April 15 before closing out the rest of their regular season with three home series.
