GREENCASTLE, Ind. –
Alex Lopez and
Nick Lenard combined for eight goals Saturday as the Kenyon College Lords lacrosse team rolled to a 16-6 win over the DePauw University Tigers and clinched a spot in the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
The win over DePauw signaled the end of the regular season, which Kenyon concluded with a 9-6 overall record and 4-3 NCAC record. Regardless of what happens in The College of Wooster's game with Oberlin College late Saturday night, the Lords will play in the postseason as the No. 3-seeded team in the four-team conference tournament.
Having to win Saturday at DePauw to earn that postseason spot, the Lords came out focused and ready.
Pat Kim and Lopez opened play with the game's first two goals. DePauw answered with one of its own goals, but Lenard scored twice and
Caleb Florence scored once before the quarter ended, giving the Lords a 5-1 lead.
The Tigers showed some resiliency in the second quarter and rattled off two straight tallies, but Kenyon got two more goals from Lopez and another from
Justin Coleman to cruise into the intermission with an 8-4 advantage.
Kenyon then blew the game wide open in the third quarter by outscoring DePauw, 6-0. Lopez had two more goals in the frame.
Zach Arlia also had two, one in a man-up situation and one even strength.
Robert Jacobs also pitched in and
Bobby Weiner got the whole thing started with a man-up goal just 1:40 into the quarter.
Two more man-up goals were registered in the fourth as Florence and Lenard put the game away for the Lords. Overall, Kenyon was an impressive 4-of-8 in man-up situations.
Lopez, a freshman, finished the contest with five goals and an assist. Lenard, a junior, had three goals and an assist. Seniors Arlia and Florence both had two goals while Kim, Jacobs, Weiner, and Coleman rang up one apiece.
Trey Trudell added two assists for the Lords, who also saw Kim and Florence each serve up an assist.
With the No. 3 seed in hand, the Lords will match up against Ohio Wesleyan University in the first round of the NCAC Tournament. That game will be played Wednesday at Ohio Wesleyan. During the regular season, Ohio Wesleyan outlasted Kenyon in a 9-8 double-overtime thriller.
