Second half surge lifts Marietta over Kenyon, 29-11

GAMBIER, Ohio – Marietta College claimed a 29-11 win over the Kenyon College football team Saturday afternoon at McBride Field in both team's season openers.
 
The Pioneers responded from an 11-0 halftime deficit and reeled off 29 straight points to claim victory.
 
Kenyon got off to a good start in the first quarter. After each teams' offenses went three-and-out and exchanged punts in their first possessions, the Lords started their second possession and drove 38 yards before Szabi Simo hit a 32-yard field goal to give Kenyon a 3-0 lead.
 
In the Pioneers' next possession, Tannon Roberts took a screen pass on second down and was hit by Lords defensive back Marcus Townsend that forced a fumble. Kenyon's Alex McQuiston recovered the fumble and four plays later Jake Bates found Brian Hunca for a 32-yard touchdown pass.
 
The Lords added a two-point conversion to push their lead to 11-0.
 
Kenyon's defense was stout in the first half forcing two fumbles, five punts and just 62 offensive yards for Mariette.
 
It was a different story in the second half however. The Pioneers scored on five-of-six possessions including four touchdowns.
 
Marietta received the opening possession of the second half and marched 60 yards in eight plays highlighted by a 46-yard touchdown pass from Akil Young to Tyler Anderson to bring the score to 11-8. The Pioneers added a two-point conversion on a pass to Anderson.
 
After a pair of punts from Kenyon's offense, Marietta went on a nine-play, 33-yard drive highlighted by Anderson's 14-yard catch and Lucas Havens' 13-yard run to take the lead. After Haven's long run, two plays later he scampered in from two yards and give the Pioneers a lead they would never relinquish.
 
Kenyon's offense stalled in the second half producing just 24 offensive yards as Marietta added two more touchdowns including another run from Havens and a 43-yard pass to Roberts.
 
The Lords were led by Bates' 100 yards on 12-of-18 passing and one touchdown. Brandon January carried 16 times for 59 yards and Hunca caught five passes for 69 yards and a score.
 
Ian Bell punted nine times for an average of 35.1 with a long of 56.
 
Defensively, McQuiston led Kenyon with 13 tackles while Nicholas LaPoint recorded 1.5 sacks.
Kenyon was out-rushed by Marietta 151-72 and gave up seven sacks to the Pioneers' defensive line.
 
The Lords will return to action September 13 at 2 p.m. when they host Oberlin College for Homecoming. It will also be the NCAC opener for both teams.
