The Lords lacrosse team will play Ohio Wesleyan in Wednesday night's
semifinal round of the NCAC tournament. The game will mark Kenyon's
fourth consecutive appearance in the conference tournament.
GAMBIER, Ohio – Since the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) instituted its four-team championship tournament in 2013, the Kenyon College Lords have been a part of it. This year is no exception, as the No. 3-seeded Kenyon team heads to Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. semifinal matchup with the No. 2-seeded Battling Bishops.
Kenyon will carry an 11-3 overall record into its fourth-straight postseason appearance. One of those three losses, a 14-7 defeat, was dealt by Ohio Wesleyan during a regular-season game on March 26. The Battling Bishops, ranked No. 15 in the latest national poll distributed by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA), own a 12-3 overall record.
On the opposite side of the bracket, No. 1-seed Denison University hosts No. 4-seed College of Wooster. The two semifinals winners will move on to Saturday's tournament final to determine what team clutches the conference trophy, which comes along with an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III tournament.
Ohio Wesleyan and Kenyon met in both of the two previous NCAC tournaments. Last year, Ohio Wesleyan was the No. 1 seed and eliminated Kenyon, the No. 4 seed, by a 15-3 count. In 2014, Ohio Wesleyan was the No. 2 seed and ousted Kenyon, the No. 3 seed, with a 13-4 victory. The Battling Bishops went on to win the NCAC tournament in both the 2013 and 2015 seasons.
Kenyon is aiming to earn a spot in its first tournament championship game and in order for the Lords to get past the Battling Bishops, they'll look to an offense that ranks 16th in the nation with an average of 14.5 goals per game. A good deal of that productivity comes from the Lords' man-up unit, which ranks fifth in the nation, scoring 48.8 percent of the time (40-of-82).
Individually, the Kenyon offense is paced by sophomore
Chris Ferraro, who has 50 points on 33 goals and 17 assists. Fellow sophomore
Josh Galardi has 41 points on 30 goals and 11 assists. Juniors
Alex Lopez and
Robert Jacobs lead the team in man-up goals with nine and eight, respectively.
Defensively, Kenyon will lean on four-year starting goalie
Patrick Shevelson. He's got a 9.49 goals against average this season. He's made 169 saves and has a .589 save percentage
Offensive output is also Ohio Wesleyan's strong suit. The Battling Bishops rank second among all NCAA teams with a scoring average of 17.2 goals per game and rank first in man-up offense, scoring 55.6 percent of the time (30-of-54). That's not to say they slouch on defense, because the Battling Bishops also rank 16th in the NCAA by allowing an average of just 6.75 goals per game.
Ohio Wesleyan's top two offensive weapons are Max Tennant and Marcus Dietz. Tennant, a freshman, leads the conference with 52 goals and an average of 3.47 goals per game. Tennant also ranks third in the conference with an average of 4.07 points per game, while Dietz, a senior, ranks fourth in the NCAC with an average of 4.00 points per game. His 60 points are crafted from 34 goals and 26 assists.
On the other side of the field, junior Ben Rigger started all 15 games this season for Ohio Wesleyan. His résumé includes a 6.58 goals against average and a .573 save percentage.
