Ladies draw Battling Bishops in NCAC semifinal

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Capturing the program's sixth North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) title, the Kenyon College field hockey team earned the No. 1 seed and right to host a semifinal game in the upcoming four-team conference postseason tournament.

The Ladies, who ended the regular season with a 13-4 record, including a 7-1 mark in NCAC play, will play that semifinal game Tuesday at 3 p.m. on The Field at Benson Bowl. Their opponent, for what will be the third time this season, will be the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops.

The Battling Bishops are the tournament's No. 4 seed after they wrapped up the regular season with an 8-5 overall record and a 5-3 NCAC record. On the other side of the NCAC tournament bracket, No. 2-seeded Earlham College hosts No. 3-seeded Denison University. The winners of those Tuesday semifinal games will meet in Saturday's championship game to be held on the campus of the highest remaining seed.

Back at the start of this season, Kenyon opened its schedule with a non-conference contest at Ohio Wesleyan. The Ladies got a first-quarter goal from Sarah Metzmaier to win that game, 1-0.

The two teams met again, one week ago, at Kenyon. This time the game was considered a conference contest. The result, however, was the same, as the Ladies used a goal from Bella Kern in the second quarter to register another 1-0 win.

Kenyon goalkeeper Payton Doan made a combined seven saves in those two Kenyon shutout wins.

Over the last 10 years, Kenyon owns a 16-3 record against Ohio Wesleyan. The two teams last met in the postseason during the semifinal round of the 2019 NCAC Tournament. An overtime goal from Hannah Sklar propelled the Ladies to a 2-1 win in that game.

As mandated by the league office, tickets for Tuesday's semifinal game are $7 for adults and $3 for children (18 and under). NCAC students with a valid institution ID will be admitted free of charge.
