Championship play comes to a close for Kenyon

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Extending Kenyon's impressive string of appearances in the NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles Championships, senior Daria Beshentseva and sophomore Eleni Dakos kicked off competition in the national brackets on Friday. The results of their matches, however, didn't fall in Kenyon's favor.

Beshentseva, one of just 32 selected to participate in the Singles Championship, couldn't get into a groove on the courts at the USTA National Campus. She fell behind by a game in each set, recovered to tie the sets at 1-1, but was unable to keep pace with her opponent, Josephine Libby, after that. Libby, from the University of Rochester, whipped up five straight games and posted a 6-1 win over Beshentseva in the first set. Libby then went up 3-1 and later 5-1 before closing out the second set with a 6-4 win.

The outcome brought a close to Beshentseva's collegiate singles career. For the 2021-22 slate, she finalized her personal singles record at 17-10, which brought her overall Kenyon career record to 52-20.

Later Friday, when doubles play commenced, Beshentseva joined Dakos to take on Elle Christensen and Tilly Rigby of Tufts University. The Kenyon duo was one of just 16 selected to play in the tournament, but the Tufts duo didn't give them an inch. Beshentseva and Dakos bowed out of the tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Christensen and Rigby.

Beshentseva finishes her Kenyon career as a two-time doubles All-American with a career record of 64-24. Dakos, who has played one shortened season and one full season at Kenyon, will take a 25-12 doubles record into her junior year.
