Strong second round moves Kenyon up standings

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -- Making a strong push Tuesday, the Kenyon College golf team gained three spots in the standings and finished tied for seventh place in the two-round West Pines Collegiate held at West Pines Golf Club.

In Monday's first round of play, the Owls posted a team score of 305 and were in a tie for 10th place in the field of 18 teams. Led by underclassmen, the Kenyon team fired a 292 on Tuesday to tie Maryville College with a final two-round team total of 597.

The Owls' charge was spearheaded by first-years Jaiden Koonar and Jonathan Oakes, who each scored a three-over round of 74 Monday. Tuesday, Koonar carded seven birdies and wound up with a two-under 69, giving him a final tournament total of 143. Oakes used four birdies Tuesday to pencil in a one-under 71 and final total of 144. In the entire field of 96 golfers, Koonar placed eighth and Oakes tied for ninth.

Sophomore Will Hulsey posted the next-best score for Kenyon. After an 80 on Monday, he bounced back with a 75 Tuesday and tied for 55th overall with a two-day total of 155. Garrett Thesing counted a 77 Monday and Armand Ouellette contributed a 78 Tuesday. Overall, Thesing finished with a 157 and a tie for 63rd place, while Ouellette ended up with a 158 and a tie for 66th place.

At the top of the standings, host Oglethorpe University won the event with a final team score of five-under 561. Babson College was a distant second with a 584 and Hamilton College took third place with 586 strokes.

Kenyon has two more events left on the fall-season portion of its 2023-24 schedule. Monday, the Owls will participate in the two-day Tartan Invitational, hosted by Carnegie Mellon University. The reserves who don't make that trip will play Monday in the single-round John DiCillo Memorial Invitational, hosted by John Carroll University.
