Gray adds Athlete of the Week honor to his bag

CLEVELAND -- Connor Gray led the Kenyon College men's golf team to a second-place showing at the NCAA Division III Fall Preview last week. Tuesday, his efforts at the three-round tournament were recognized in the form of the North Coast Athletic Conference's Athlete of the Week award.

Gray finished the Fall Preview in an individual tie for seventh place among a field of 90 golfers. The Kenyon junior posted a four-under-par score of 67 in each of the two opening rounds, which were played Monday. His first round included five birdies and a bogey, and his second round included six birdies and a pair of bogeys.

When play resumed Tuesday for the third round on The River Course at Kingsmill Resort, Gray was steady, but did not have quite the success he had in Monday's rounds. He carded five bogeys and a birdie for a four-over-par 75.

Gray's final stroke count of 209 was the best three-round score posted by any Kenyon player this year and was just five strokes off the tournament's winning score of 204, which was registered by Evan Acevedo from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Gray's play, as well as his teammates', has the Owls ranked nationally as the No. 2 team in the most recent Bushnell/Golfweek DIII Coaches' Poll.

The schedule ahead has some members of the team competing, as individuals, in The Indy at Forest Hills on Friday. As a team, the Owls next tournament will be the Wabash Invitational, which gets underway Monday.
