Soric highlights Owls results at NCAC Championship

DELAWARE, Ohio -- After winning the long jump Friday, Kenyon College sophomore Paula Soric won the triple jump Saturday during the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Ohio Wesleyan University. For her efforts, she was named the 2023 NCAC Field Athlete of the Year.

Soric, who was previously named the NCAC Field Athlete of the Year during the indoor season, helped the Kenyon team tally 54 points, which was good for seventh place in the final Championship standings.

Soric won the 2023 outdoor triple jump crown with a leap that measured 38-7 ½ (11.77 meters). That broke her previous Kenyon record of 38-4 ¾ set just a couple weeks ago at the Duane Gomez Invitational. Additionally, that measurement improves Soric's chance of qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championship. Her mark currently ranks 19th among all NCAA Division III triple jumpers.

Running a leg on Kenyon's seventh-place 4x100-meter relay team, as well, Soric ended up accounting for 22 of the team's 54 total points. Running with her on that relay were Maya Virdell, Grace Neuger, and Jada Swearingen. They clocked in at 52.72.

In the hurdles, Virdell and Neuger, who both qualified with personal-bests yesterday, added to Kenyon's total on Saturday. Virdell ran the 400-meter hurdles in 1:10.43 and placed fifth. Neuger completed the 100-meter hurdles in 16.50 and placed sixth.

Other point scorers for Kenyon on Saturday included first-year Anna Brown and sophomore Logan Vidal. They placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 800-meter run and racked up a combined seven team points. Brown ran a 2:23.65 and Vidal ran a personal record 2:25.04.

Back in field events, senior Erika Conant claimed seventh place in the high jump by clearing a personal-best 4-10 ¼ (1.48 meters). She also followed up Soric's performance in the triple jump with an eighth-place distance of 34-0 ¾ (10.38 meters). Overall, with her heptathlon results included from last weekend, Conant personally gained eight points for the Owls.

Kenyon's last few points of the Championship came from the 4x400-meter relay team of Brown, Virdell, Vidal, and Denna Medrano. They finished the race in 4:11.78, which placed them sixth.
