Owls tally two wins at Duane Gomez Invitational

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's track and field team hosted teams from around the state on Saturday for the program's lone home meet of the season, the Duane Gomez Invitational from Wilder Track. The event also marked the penultimate event of the 2026 outdoor schedule.

Competing through on and off rain for the whole event, the Owls were able to put together several strong finishes across the board, ending up in fourth place out of seven teams with 86 points.

On the track, Kenyon's lone solo win of the afternoon came in the 5,000, where Anna Brown bested a field of 15 other runners with a 17:52.44 time. Lucie Prior and Turner Clark joined her in the top 10, with Prior slotting into eighth at 19:37.22 and Clark taking ninth at 19:49.01.

The Owls added another team win in the final track event of the day, the 4x400 relay, where Addilyn ToberJean Cook, Brown and Ari Sobel made their rounds in 4:08.71 to top the five team field.

Perhaps Kenyon's most memorable moment came in the 400, where Sobel broke the over 13 year-old program record. After tying the mark at 58.70 a week ago, she shaved a tenth of a second off her time for a 58.60 second place finish, breaking Alexia Derkasch's time from 2013. Also turning in a good race in the 400 was Cook, who took sixth with a 1:04.23 time.

Another second place finish came in the 400 hurdles, where Addi Tober earned a runner up spot with a 1:09.96 mark. Kenyon added a third place finish in the 4x100, where a team of Sobel, Georgia Yatrakis, Noa Helmbrecht and Lia Wahl rounded the track in 49.65.

Wahl and Helmbrecht traded finishes on the 100 and 200 meter sprints for a total of four more finishes inside the top five for the Owls. Wahl took third in the 100 with a 12.76 time, while Helmbrecht was not far behind in fourth at 12.81. In the 200, Helbrecht came away with a 26.53 fourth place finish, and Wahl took fifth at 26.65.

Backing up the distance to the 1500, Olivia Ide gave her team another top ten finish, taking ninth with a 5:10.85 mark.

In the field events, Kenyon's best finish came in the triple jump, where Sadie Olson leapt to a 9.76 meter (32-0 1/4) mark to take third. Wahl turned in another top five in the high jump, where she cleared a 1.46 meter (4-09 ½) bar to take fourth.

Penelope Artemis headlined the throws as she usually does, with her best effort coming in the hammer throw. The twirled a 43.39 meter (142-0) hammer to earn third place out of 21 players.  In the shot put, she heaved a 10.94 meter (35-10 ¾) toss which put her in sixth place.

For the invitational, Ohio Wesleyan took home the top spot, amassing 222 points overall. Mount Vernon Nazarene took second with 103 points, while Wittenberg (89) finished ahead of Kenyon to round out the top four.

The Owls will be back on the oval on Friday, April 24 at Denison University.
