Owls finish strong, take 12th at Gate City Invite

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Hitting the road for the second time in as many weeks, the Kenyon College men's golf team participated in the Gate City Invite to start the week, finishing up on Tuesday afternoon. The three-round event took place at Forest Oaks Country Club, as Greensboro College hosted the field of 18 teams and 96 individuals.

After coming out with a team score of six-over par in round one, the Owls bounced back with a one-under score in round two and three-under in round three to climb up the leaderboard to finish 12th overall with a score of two over, or 866 strokes.

Jonathan Oakes led the Kenyon squad for the second week in a row, finishing in a tie for 21st on the individual leaderboard with a two-under-par score. The sophomore had a shaky start to the team's third fall tournament, carding a +5 in round one. However, he turned things around in a big way for round two, tearing up the par 72, 7100-yard course with a seven-under 65. That score tops his previous collegiate single-round score of 66 and ranks second all-time in program history for a single round. He finished out with an even-par 72 to finalize his -2 mark.

In second for the Owls was Will Hulsey, backing up his second-place team finish from last week's Flower City Preview. The junior was very steady on day one, carding a two-over 74 and a three-over 75 in rounds one and two. He fired off a 69 on Tuesday's third round for an even-par finish for the tournament, good enough for 29th, climbing 31 spots on the leaderboard in the process.

Adrian Jordan was Kenyon's top scorer after the first round, finishing the opening 18 holes with a three-under 69. The first year had a slight misstep in round two with a five-over 77, but brought it back around with a 72 to close out his weekend at +2 in 45th place, third on the team.

Sophomore Jaiden Koonar was fourth for the Owls in the tournament, sticking around the low single-digit over-par number for all three rounds. He shot a two-over in the first round, four-over in the second, and came back with his best round of the tournament, a +1 to sit 73rd individually.

Rounding out the team was senior Armand Ouellette, who started out the tournament with a nine-over 81, but settled things down in rounds two and three, shooting 73 and 72 respectively.

Methodist finished first in the 18-team field, shooting an impressive 29-under-par, clearing the field by six strokes. Washington and Lee finished next at -23, while Emory rounded out the leaderboard at -18.

Kenyon will take the week off before returning to action on Sunday, October 13 for the first of three rounds of the Golfweek Invitational in Miramar Beach, Florida at Raven Golf Club.
