Kenyon ties for seventh place in Tiger Invite

PINEHURST, N.C. -- The Kenyon College men continue to prove they are among the one of the best programs in NCAA Division III golf. Over the last two days, the Owls competed in the Tiger Invite, hosted by Hampden-Sydney College, and finished in a tie for seventh place.

Kenyon, ranked at No. 25 in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek DIII Coaches Poll, recorded 602 strokes in the two-round tournament and tied with Guilford College, a team ranked at No. 21.

No. 20-ranked Huntingdon College won the Invite with a final score of 583. That was just ahead of No. 1-ranked Methodist University, which posted a 589. All but one team that finished ahead of Kenyon was nationally ranked.

Playing at the par-72 Forest Creek Golf Club, the Kenyon men scored a team total of 301 on both days of the tournament. The Owls were tied for eighth place after Sunday's round and then moved up to seventh at the conclusion of Monday's round.

Helping make that move happen was sophomore Will Hulsey, who fired a team-best 71 on Monday. That score was an eight-stroke improvement over his Sunday score. Hulsey finished with a two-round total of 150 and a tie for 24th place in the field of 90 golfers.

First-year Jonathan Oakes led Kenyon for the second week in a row. He fired rounds of 73 and 75 for a 148 that put him in a tie for 16th place. Oakes' classmate, Jaiden Koonar, was just a few strokes back. He put up rounds of 74 and 77 for a 151 that placed him in a tie for 28th with six others.

Completing Kenyon's five-man team were senior Garrett Thesing and junior Armand Ouellette. Thesing scored a 153, good for a tie for 42nd place, and Ouellette carded a 166, which put him in a tie for 85th.
