Owls tally two wins, take fourth at Wooster Invite

WOOSTER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's track and field team got the new year started with a trip to The College of Wooster to compete in the Wooster Invitational, a six-team event comprised primarily of North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) institutions.

The Owls stacked two event-wins on the track from junior Anna Brown and first-year Ariella Sobel and added several more top-five finishes, as the team amassed 70 points and finished in fourth place.

Kenyon's best event of the day was the 800-meter, as three runners placed in the top five. Brown led the field of 10 runners with a 2:25.76 time, clearing the competition by over two seconds. Rigby Zentner placed fourth with a 2:35.78 mark, while Logan Vidal was not far behind, finishing the two laps in 2:36.91.

Sobel's success came in the 400-meter, where she bested the eleven-woman field by over a second en route to a 1:01.56 finish. She added to her stellar day in the 200-meter, where she captured third with a speedy 27.44 time.

Other Owls' top-five finishes on the track included Lucie Prior, who completed the one-mile race in 5:56.21. Ellianne Retzlaff just missed out on the top-five but still scored points with a 6:06.33 sixth-place mark. In the 60-meter, Nora Helmbrecht led Kenyon to another fifth-place finish, clocking in at 8.18 seconds.

Finally in the 4x400-meter relay, Brown, Vidal, Zentner, and Sasha Langholm teamed up for a 4:32.89 time to take fifth out of five teams, but still scored points due to a disqualification.

In the field, first-year Penelope Artemis headlined the Owls' efforts, notching two top-five finishes. Her best came in the weight throw, as she twirled a 12.35-meter (40-6 ¼) score on her fifth and final attempt to take second. In the shot put, Artemis' best throw came on her third attempt, as a 11.02-meter (36-2) toss landed her in fourth place.

Sadie Olson rounded out Kenyon's top-five finishes from the field, leaping to a 4.83-meter (15-10 ¼) mark on her last attempt to grab third place.

For the day, Kenyon totaled 70 points and finished in fourth place. Wittenberg took home first place, tallying 124 points. Ohio Wesleyan (107) and Allegheny (81) rounded out the top three, while Oberlin (54) and Wooster (43) placed in fifth and sixth respectively.

Up next, Kenyon will return to Wooster for the Fighting Scots Invitational, starting at 11:00 am on January 25.
