Kenyon turnovers pave way for OWU victory

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Ohio Wesleyan University football team flipped three Kenyon College turnovers into 17 points Saturday and ran away with a 55-13 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win over the host Owls at McBride Field.

The Battling Bishops (2-5, 1-4 NCAC) offense drew first blood, using its opening possession to march 75 yards in 12 plays. The last play of that drive was a 15-yard scoring strike from quarterback C.J. Jackson to receiver Josh Hurst, who gave the visiting team a 7-0 lead with 6:54 remaining in the first quarter.

On Kenyon's ensuing possession, the Owls drew up two running plays and then a pass that was picked off at their own 36-yard line by John Banks. Banks returned the pick to the end zone just 1:36 after the first Ohio Wesleyan score.

Now trailing by a pair of touchdowns, Kenyon cut that deficit in half early in the second quarter. Big passes from Drew Morgan to Tyler Gladden and then to Luca Rumberg set the Owls up on Ohio Wesleyan's two-yard line. Two plays later, Morgan kept the ball and carried it over the goal line from one yard out.

Ohio Wesleyan kicker Ryan Elliott booted in two field goals before halftime, giving the Battling Bishops a 20-7 advantage. The first of those two field goals was set up by another Kenyon interception, this one at the Owls' 25-yard line.

The Battling Bishops cranked up the offense from there, scoring five second-half touchdowns. One of those scores was set up by Kenyon's third interception and one was a 84-yard punt return from Jake Smothers during the game's final minutes.

Hurst added another receiving touchdown for Ohio Wesleyan and finished the game with eight catches, 111 receiving yards and two scores. Two of the second-half touchdowns came from running back Devn Haley, who carried the ball 22 times for 135 yards. Fellow running back Giovanni Rufus accounted for the other Battling Bishops' touchdown and Jackson put up QB numbers that included 309 yards on 22 completions.

Overall, Ohio Wesleyan piled up 505 yards of offense and averaged 6.2 yards per play. On the other side of the ball, Kenyon had 249 yards of offense, averaging 4.3 yards per snap.

Trailing 41-7 in the fourth quarter, the Owls logged their second touchdown of the game. Running back Nolan Dirks capped off a nice seven-play, 79-yard drive with a scoring scamper of nine yards.

Individually, running back Jordon Benjamin had the best game for the Owls offense. He ran 16 times for 81 yards. Morgan threw for 165 yards on 16-of-38 attempts. Dylan Carlquist had four catches for 60 yards and Gladden finished with five catches for 52 yards.

Defensively, the Owls added to their nation-leading total of sacks with one quarterback take-down from each Jackson Belyn, Andrew Pohlman, and Michael Kerr, who now has a team-best 5.5 sacks on the season.

Up next for Kenyon (1-6, 1-4 NCAC) is a road game at The College of Wooster ( 4-4, 3-3 NCAC).
