Owls open season with pair of record runs

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's indoor track and field team kicked off the 2025-26 season on Saturday in record-setting fashion, as sophomores Noa Helmbrecht and Ariella Sobel turned in program records in the 300- and 400-meter dashes, respectively.

The record-breaking season opener took place in the Tiger Opener, an unscored meet that included a few NCAA Division I teams at Wittenberg University's Steemer Fieldhouse.

Helmbrecht got the day started with a preliminary heat time of 7.92 in the 60-meter dash, which was not too far off from the Kenyon record of 7.86. Later, in the finals of the 60, Helmbrecht clocked in at 8:18 and claimed eighth place.

One event prior to the 60-meter finals, Helmbrecht posted a record run in the 300-meter race. She crossed the line in 42.46, which gave her a fourth-place finish and erased the old Kenyon mark of 44.01 set by Rani Woodard back in the 1992 season.

Not to be outdone, Sobel rang up a Kenyon record run in the 400-meter dash. She completed the event in 59.62, which was good for sixth place and eliminated the old Kenyon standard of 1:00.23, which was established by both Kirkley Doyle and Beth Dahlburg in the 2012 campaign.

Four events later, Sobel added a 12th-place finish in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 26.69.

While Helmbrecht and Sobel were making their presence known on the track, Penelope Artemis, also a sophomore, fared well in field events for the Owls. She doubled-up on sixth-place showings in the weight throw and shot put. In the weight throw, her best toss measured 43' 0½" (13.12m) and her best heave in the shot put traveled 35' 8" (10.87m).
