Sobel’s speed leads to NCAC honor

CLEVELAND -- In the first meet of the 2025-26 season, Kenyon College sophomore Ari Sobel made quite an impact. Her effort in the 400-meter dash not only set a program record, but led to her being named the North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for mid/distance events in women's indoor track and field competition.

The conference office made the announcement Tuesday, three days after Sobel turned some heads at the Tiger Opener, which was hosted by Wittenberg University and had a few NCAA Division I and Division II teams in the field. Sobel blazed through the 400 in a time of 59.62. That placed her sixth among 23 other runners, but also placed her as the fastest runner among all NCAA Division III participants in the race.

Sobel's time went down as a new Kenyon record, breaking the previous record of 1:00.23, which was shared by Kirkley Doyle and Beth Dahlburg in the 2012 campaign.

Later in the meet, Sobel added a 12th-place finish in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 26.69, which was a personal record.

Sobel and the rest of the Owls team now have a long break before returning to competition in The College of Wooster Quad on January 17.
