Owls distance runners shine at All-Ohio Championship

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's indoor track and field team had some fantastic individual finishes at the annual All-Ohio Championship, which was hosted by Otterbein University at the Clements Recreational and Fitness Center. The Owls tore up the track, tallying points in all four events they competed in. Overall, Kenyon competed in four of 18 events at the 16-team meet, placing 10th with 27 points.

Despite only competing in four final races and not taking part in any field events, the Owls found plenty of success in the events they did appear in. Over four distance races, including three individual events and one relay, Kenyon runners combined for five top-eight finishes, found the podium three times, and claimed one individual championship.

Kenyon scored points right off the top, tallying two points with a seventh-place showing in the 4,000-meter distance medley relay. The quartet of Owen Rodstrom, Josh Greville, Colt Murphy, and William Wilson posted a time of 11:00.04, marking the first time the Owls have run the DMR this season.

Charlie Blackmer had the biggest individual day, winning the one-mile race and finishing third in the 800-meter run to account for 16 of Kenyon's 27 points. The first-year flew out ahead of the pack in the mile, pacing the field by over a second and setting the standard with a time of 4:20.69. The nice mark set a season-best in the event for both Blackmer and Kenyon. Blackmer backed up the win with a bronze-medal showing in the 800, where he stopped the clock at 1:59.04, just under 1.5 seconds behind the top time.

Peter Bernhardt put together Kenyon's other podium-worthy performance. The senior clocked in at 8:57.44 in the 3,000-meter race, setting a new season-best for himself and scoring six points in third place. The time was about five seconds slower than first and a little over three seconds behind second, but he paced fourth place by about 5.5 ticks.

The 3,000-meter also saw senior Colt Murphy add to Kenyon's total. Murphy tacked on three points with a sixth-place finish, crossing the finish line at 9:06.03, a career-best time by nearly three seconds. The Owls nearly had a third scorer as Joshua Breard narrowly missed the eight scoring placements with a ninth-place finish at 9:18.88.

The University of Mount Union took the team title with a total of 124 points. Baldwin Wallace University finished second at 75, followed by Denison University in third at 66.

Up next, the Owls will host the Kenyon Tune Up in Gambier on the Toan Indoor Track on Friday, February 21. The meet is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start.
