Owls host home meet to wrap up regular season

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's track and field team welcomed two fellow North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) teams to Gambier on Friday evening for the Owls' annual indoor home meet. The Kenyon Tune-Up marked the end of the indoor regular season as the NCAC Multi-Event Championship and NCAC Championship are next up for the Owls.

Kenyon competed in nine of the 14 events on the Toan Indoor Track, and the Owls wracked up a dozen top-four finishes over the course of the unscored meet. Ohio Wesleyan University and The College of Wooster were the other competitors going against the Owls at their home facility.

In field events, Penelope Artemis had a strong showing in both throws events. In the shot put, the first-year finished second after her fourth attempt landed 11.56 meters (37-11 ¼) out. The mark was exactly two inches away from matching the Kenyon indoor record of 38-1 ¼ set by Funmilayo Lawal in 2016, but it was not a season-best as Artemis had an 11.60-meter (38-0 ¾) hurl earlier this month. Artemis also finished third in the weight throw, recording a 12.85-meter (42-2) toss on her sixth and final attempt.

Olivia Gumz also garnered a pair of top-four finishes in the field. The sophomore placed second in the long jump at 4.89m (16-0 ½), setting a new career best in the process. In the high jump, Gumz placed third with a 1.35-meter (4-5) leap.

On the track, Gumz also added to Kenyon's first-place finish in their first race, the 4x200-meter relay, though the Owls were the only team to run the race. Noa Helmbrecht, Ariella Sobel, Talulla Sheridan, and Gumz clocked in at 1:50.95, the fastest mark for a Kenyon quartet in the event this season.

Kenyon also dominated the last event, the 3,000-meter race, as Owls runners took the top four spots in the five-runner field. Senior Ellianne Retzlaff led the way at 11:44.85, followed closely by sophomore Hannah Gross at 11:46.55. Isabel Prosnitz, a junior, finished third at 12:31.54, while Cassidy Kaler placed fourth with a time of 12:39.97. Kaler's time marked a season-best for the first-year in the event.

Helmbrecht, another first-year, also added a season-best during the meet. Her time of 8.06 seconds in the 60-meter dash was good for third place. Not only was it a season-best for Helmbrecht, but it was also the best time of any Kenyon runner in the event this season. Sobel, yet another first-year, finished fourth at 8.33, another personal-best mark.

Addilyn Tober added to the strong showing for Kenyon newcomers as the first-year finished second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 11.25.
