Owls secure seventh place at Bob Shannon Invite

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's indoor track and field team scored 40.5 points Saturday afternoon at the Mitchell Center and occupied seventh place in the final team standings for Denison University's annual Bob Shannon Invitational.

The host Big Red won the nine-team Invitational with 138.5 points. Case Western Reserve University was second with 125 points, and California University of Pennsylvania rounded out the top three with a final score of 97 points.

A large chunk of Kenyon's final point total was scored in the mile run, where a trio of Owls combined for 19 points. Leading that group was senior Peter Bernhardt, who finished second with a time of 4:34.23. Juniors Colt Murphy and Owen Rodstrom were not far off Bernhardt's pace. Murphy placed third with a personal-record time of 4:36.30 and Rodstrom was fourth in 4:38.73.

Bernhardt went on to compete in the 800-meter run and added one more point to the Kenyon total by placing eighth with a time of 2:02.92. Ahead of him, teammate and first-year Charlie Blackmer nailed down a third-place finish, crossing the line in a season- and college-best 1:57.69.

Continuing on the track, the Owls scored points in three more events, two of them individual events. First, junior Josh Greville nabbed eighth place in the 60-meter hurdles (9.76) and, next, Emmanuel Makelele, a senior, posted a fourth-place showing in the 60-meter dash (7.12).

In the last event of the meet, Blackmer led off Kenyon's 4x400-meter relay team that placed fourth with a time of 3:39.10. In order, Blackmer was followed by William Wilson, Dylan Ryznar, and Jimmy Baker.

In field events, Kenyon's lone scoring performance came from first-year Richard Grooms, who took sixth place in the triple jump. His best leap covered 37-5 ¼ (11.41 meters).

Next up for the Purple and White is a trip to nearby Otterbein University for the annual All-Ohio Championship, which will get underway at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
