Sobel, Soric steer Owls to seventh-place showing

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Senior Paula Soric and first-year Ariella Sobel chalked up event wins Saturday and combined for 22 team points as they led the Kenyon College women's indoor track and field team to a seventh-place finish at Denison University's annual Bob Shannon Invitational.

The Owls wrapped up the meet with 53 points, just seven points behind sixth-place College of Wooster. Case Western Reserve University won the nine-team competition with 119 points. California University of Pennsylvania was a close second with 117 points and the host Big Red finished third with a final tally of 74 points.

Soric registered Kenyon's first event win in the long jump. Although she hadn't competed in the event since the 2024 outdoor season, she soared to a win with a measurement of 16-5 (5.00 meters). Right behind her was sophomore Olivia Gumz, who took the runner-up spot with a leap that spanned 15-9 ½ (4.81 meters). Together, they accounted for 18 team points.

On the track, Sobel claimed her first-place spot in the 400-meter dash, a race she won with a time of 1:00.24, topping her previous season-best of 1:00.52. In the same race, junior Anna Brown posted a sixth-place finish in a time of 1:02.88. Sobel earned 10 team points for her win and, later in the meet, tacked on another two points for her seventh-place effort in the 200-meter dash, after she crossed the finish line in 27.55.

A good portion of the rest of the Owls' team points came from a trio of fourth-place finishes. Those were recorded by first-years Penelope Artemis, Lucie Prior, and Noa Helmbrecht. Artemis was fourth in the shot put with a season-best toss of 38-0 ¾ (11.60 meters), Prior rang up the same placement by finishing the mile in a personal-record time of 5:45.25, and Helmbrecht matched those finishes by sprinting through the 60-meter dash in 8.10.

Kenyon's other five points came from Artemis and Cassidy Kaler, another member of the team's first-year class. Artemis gained one point for her eighth-place showing in the weight throw, while Kaler rounded out the scoring with a fifth-place run in the 3,000-meter event. Artemis' best in the weight throw traveled 44-0 (13.41 meters), while Kaler completed the distance event in 13:12.32.

Next up for the Purple and White is a trip to nearby Otterbein University for the annual All-Ohio Championship, which will get underway at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
