Kenyon women finish fifth at NCAC Championship

OBERLIN, Ohio -- After the first day of the North Coast Athletic Conference Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship, the Kenyon College Owls sat in fifth place. Saturday, that placement remained the same for the Owls, who chalked up 57 points in the Championship's final standings.

Kenyon, which placed sixth at last year's meet, was powered by junior Anna Brown and senior Paula Soric.

Brown accounted for 16 team points Saturday with a pair of runner-up finishes. First, she took second place in the mile, finishing her run in a personal-best time of 5:10.94, which was just two-and-a-half seconds off the winning time. Later, Brown whipped up a runner-up spot in the 800-meter run. She completed that race in 2:20.57, which was, again, about two-and-a-half seconds shy of the top time.

Soric, coming off a second-place showing in yesterday's long jump, claimed the title in Saturday's triple jump. It was her third consecutive conference crown in the event. She won it with a jump the covered 37-3 ¼ (11.36 meters), which was a season-best and tacked on 10 more points to the Kenyon team tally.

A couple of Kenyon first-years earned points in other individual events. Penelope Artemis nailed down a fifth-place finish in the shot put, turning in a measurement of 37-8 ¼ (11.50 meters). While she was throwing, classmate Noa Helmbrecht was sprinting through the 60-meter dash in 8.05 seconds. That was good enough for a sixth-place spot, one position better than her seeding after yesterday's preliminary heats.

Finally, Kenyon gained five points in relay competitions. Starting off the day, Helmbrecht teamed with Talulla Sheridan, Soric, and Ariella Sobel to land a seventh-place finish in the 4x200-meter run. Their time was 1:50.00, another season-best for the Owls. Then, at the end of the day, it was Sobel, Helmbrecht, Addilyn Tober, and Brown who joined up to post a sixth-place and season-best time of 4:14.11 in the 4x400-meter relay.
