ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Kenyon College women's outdoor track and field wrapped up the second of two days at Emory University's Spring Break Classic on Saturday. The Owls competed in two of nine running events and three of four field events to cap their season-opening weekend.
Paula Soric posted Kenyon's best individual result on Saturday, placing 14th out of 64 competitors in the long jump. The senior's longest leap landed her 5.16 meters (16-11 ¼) away. Olivia Gumz and Sadie Olson, a pair of sophomores, also competed in the long jump. Gumz placed 34th at 4.70 meters (15-5), while Olson was 50th at 4.34 meters (14-2 ¾).
Kenyon kept busy with a pair of throws events, the shot put and the discus. Penelope Artemis paced the Owls in the shot put, placing 22nd in the field of 69. The first-year's best attempt measured 10.96 meters (35-11 ½). Jolien Kusi placed 58th in the event at 8.54 meters (28-0 ¼) before representing the Owls in the discus. The senior's best discus attempt landed 29.73 meters (97-6) out, good for 37th out of 58 competitors.
On the track, the Owls only competed in a pair of 100-meter races: the 100-meter dash's qualifying heat and the 100-meter hurdles. Noa Helmbrecht had the team's fastest time in the 100-meter dash, stopping the clock at 12.87. While the first-year did not make the eight-runner final, she did place 27th out of 80 runners. Gumz (13.64), Isabella Roach (14.07), Alina Secrest (14.13), and Grace Sparks (14.91) also ran in the qualifier. First-year Addilyn Tober took on the 100-meter hurdles, placing 40th out of 53 competitors with a time of 18.27.
Up next, the Owls will compete much closer to home when the team travels to nearby Granville, Ohio, for Denison University's Lid-Lifter meet on Saturday, March 29.
