Owls have long list of strong showings at Lid-Lifter

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's outdoor track and field team put together a long list of good results at Saturday's Lid-Lifter meet, hosted by Denison University in nearby Granville, Ohio. The Owls wracked up six top-three finishes, pairing three silver-medal showings with a trio of bronze-medal finishes.

Kenyon's strong showings were spread across both track and field events, though the runners had a slight edge. All three of the team's runner-up finishes came on the track, while two of the team's three third-place finishes came in field events.

The meet's first running event saw the Owls run the show as Kenyon competitors went 2-3-4. Colt Murphy led Owls runners in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in second, finishing just over two seconds behind first at 9:56.62. Fellow senior Peter Bernhardt finished close behind in third, stopping the clock at 9:58.48. Noah Hopkins rounded out the consecutive finishes in fourth. The junior's time of 10:05.63 was a personal best. Owen Rodstrom added another solid finish, placing sixth at 10:24.34.

While two seniors led the way in the steeplechase, Kenyon's four other top-three finishes all came from first-years. On the track, Charlie Blackmer and Jackson Adams both secured second-place finishes. Blackmer barely missed pacing the 1,500-meter race, clocking in just 0.9 seconds slower than the top time at 4:04.09. Senior William Wilson also ran well, finishing fourth with a career-best time of 4:06.53. In the 800-meter race, Adams posted his season's top time en route to second place, crossing the finish line at 2:02.91.

In the field, Graham Yeager and Marius Mazeika each added third-place finishes. Yeager's bronze-medal showing came in the discus throw, where he set a new season-high with a 42.17-meter (138-4) toss. Mazeika placed third in the triple jump, where his longest leap measured 11.51 meters (37-9 ¼) out. J'Sun Gardner added to the team's top-five finishes with a season-best showing in the javelin throw, where the junior's best attempt landed 44.63 meters (146-5) away.

Other Owls to add top-10 finishes on the day included Theo Hordon in the 5,000-meter race (eighth), Ezekiel Kiwanuka in the long jump (eighth), Dylan Ryznar in the 800 (ninth), and Yeager and Max Pollio in the shot put (tied for 10th).

Up next, Kenyon will compete in the first of two straight weekends at Ohio Wesleyan University. The Owls will lace up for the Marv Frye Invitational on Saturday, April 5, before the two-day All-Ohio Championship on April 11-12.
