Owls record three wins and a record at Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- In the unscored Denison University Lid-Lifter meet on Saturday, the Kenyon College women's track and field team had 14 top-10 individual-event finishes, including a trio of first-place finishes and a new program record in the hammer throw.

The Owls most prolific event was the 5,000-meter run. Sophomore Olivia Ide won the race in 18:15.93, but the Kenyon team also got a second-place finish from junior Anna Brown and a 10th-place finish from sophomore Hannah Gross. Ide's time was a personal collegiate best. Brown, who typically does not run long distances, also recorded a personal best, as did Gross, who is a distance runner. Brown clocked in at 19:14.78 and Gross finished in 20:35.30.

Kenyon's other two event wins came from Paula Soric and Penelope Artemis. Soric, a senior, won the triple jump with a best effort that covered 38-3 ½, just four inches shy of her Kenyon record. Artemis, a first-year, topped the field in the hammer throw, launching the weight 137-6 (41.91 meters). Not only was that a personal best, but it bested the previous program record of 131-0 (39.93 meters) set by Funmilayo Lawal in the 2016 season.

Ariella Sobel, another first-year, had Kenyon's next-best finish. She took the runner-up spot in the 400-meter race, clocking in at 1:00.96. Backing that result up was Soric, who took third place in the long jump. She cleared 17-0 (5.18 meters).

Fifth-place finishes were recorded by sophomore Alessandra Murray and first-year Addilyn Tober. Murray took the spot by heaving the javelin 95-0 (28.97 meters), while Tober hit the same placement in the 400-meter hurdles, an event she finished in 1:12.33.

Three more top-10 finishes for the Owls came from Lucie Prior and Noa Helmbrecht. Prior, a first-year, claimed sixth place in the 1,500-meter race, an event she completed in 5:15.96. Helmbrecht, also a first-year, finished sixth in the 200-meter dash and seventh in the 100-meter dash. Her respective times in those runs were 26.74 and 12.82.

Checking in with 10th-place finishes were Olivia Gumz and Ellianne Retzlaff. Gumz did so in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4-6 (1.37 meters), and Retzlaff did so in the 1,500, following up Prior's finish with a personal record time of 5:30.73.
