Owls earn four titles, set a record at All-Ohio

DELAWARE, Ohio -- Over the course of the two-day All-Ohio Championship held at Ohio Wesleyan University, the Kenyon College women's track and field team won four event titles, set one record, and scored 48 team points to claim an eighth-place finish in the field of 13 NCAA Division III teams.

Leading the way for the Owls was senior Paula Soric, who dominated the jumps. She captured All-Ohio titles in both the long jump and the triple jump. In a pool of 18 long jumpers, Soric topped the list with an effort that measured 17-10 ¼ (5.33 meters). Then, among 10 others in the triple jump competition, Soric took gold with leaps that spanned 38-9 ½ (11.82 meters). Both of those marks were not only season bests, but were collegiate bests for Soric. Additionally, her mark in the triple jump was a Kenyon record, topping her previous record of 38-7 ½ (11.77 meters), which she set two seasons ago.

On the track, two more Kenyon student-athletes claimed All-Ohio titles. On Friday, sophomore Olivia Ide turned in a time of 38:00.14 to finish first in the 10,000-meter run. That time was a personal record, it bested the times of 13 other runners in the race, and it was 83 seconds faster than the second-place finisher's time.

The Owls' other event title was claimed by junior Anna Brown, who finished first in the 800-meter run. She beat 22 other runners to the line and her time of 2:16.89 was a season best.

Each one of those event wins netted Kenyon 10 team points. The Owls' other eight points also were collected on the track.

First-year Ariella Sobel burned through the 400-meter race in a time of 59.56, which was good for fourth place and five team points. She just missed her season best of 59.55 and was not too far off the Kenyon record of 58.70.

Kenyon's final three points were tallied by its 4x100-meter relay team. That squad was made up of Noa Helmbrecht, Olivia Gumz, Alina Secrest, and Sobel. They worked together to post a time of 51.68, which was a team season best and also good for sixth place.

It was the second straight season the Owls placed eight at the All-Ohio Championship. They'll now look ahead to their next meet, which will be the Duane Gomez Invitational, the team's lone home meet of the season. That event will be held Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. at Wilder Track.
