Six podium placements put Owls fourth at OWU

DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's track and field team competed in its first scored meet of the outdoor season, and the Owls scored well at Ohio Wesleyan University's Marv Frye Invitational. Kenyon competitors combined for six podium-worthy placements throughout the meet as the Owls tallied 65 points to place fourth out of 10 teams.

Kenyon could not have asked for a better start to the outing as Lucie Prior locked up a first-place finish in the first running event. The first-year paced the field in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, stopping the clock at 12:21.17 to score 10 points. Her time was 23.7 seconds faster than the next-best finisher, which was an impressive showing for her first time competing in the steeplechase collegiately. The event was a big one for the Owls as Ellianne Retzlaff also joined Prior on the podium. The senior clocked in at 12:49.83, good for third place and six points.

The Owls added two second-place showings and two third-place finishes over the rest of the meet. Anna Brown and Paula Soric regularly find themselves near the top of the standings, and both Owls missed out on gold by the slimmest of margins.

In the long jump, Soric placed second with a 5.35-meter (17-6 ¾) leap. Her top distance was just 0.01 meters (¾ inch) behind the top performer. In the 1,500-meter race, Brown crossed the finish line at 4:44.83. Her mark was just 0.47 seconds behind the fastest time, and it set both a season-best for the Owls and a personal best for Brown. The 1,500 was another high-scoring race for the Owls as Olivia Ide added a sixth-place finish, clocking in at 5:02.24.

The team's two other third-place finishes came on the track, where Addilyn Tober had a hand in both. Tober tallied an individual bronze-medal finish in the 400-meter hurdles, where the first-year clocked in at 1:11.44, a season-best for both Tober and the team. In the final running event, the 4x400-meter relay, Tober teamed with Ariella Sobel, Jean Cook, and Brown to finish third at 4:12.75.

Sobel, another first-year, also ran well in the 400-meter race, placing fourth at 1:00.13. She and Tober joined Noa Helmbrecht and Alina Secrest in the 4x200-meter relay, where the Kenyon quartet placed sixth at 53.72. Helmbrecht had Kenyon's other scoring finish on the track, placing seventh in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.94.

Back in field results, Kenyon scored in three other throwing events. Penelope Artemis continued her record-setting first-year season, breaking her own week-old program record in the hammer throw. The first-year's best toss measured 42.20 meters (138-5), surpassing her previous program-best of 41.91 meters (137-6) set last weekend.

Artemis's record-setting mark in the hammer throw was good for seventh place, and she placed even higher in the shot put. The first-year's best attempt landed 10.76 meters (35-3 ¾) away, good for fifth place. Alessandra Murray added to the team's total with a scoring placement in the javelin throw, where her longest toss measured 26.55 meters (87-1).

Kenyon will look to repeat and build upon its strong showing in Delaware as the Owls head back to Ohio Wesleyan next weekend for the All-Ohio Championship. The two-day meet will start on Friday, April 11, and wrap up on Saturday, April 12.
