Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Kenyon ousts Oberlin, Chintala registers record

OBERLIN, Ohio – David Chintala became the Kenyon College men's lacrosse program's all-time leading goal scorer on Wednesday night, netting three goals, including the game-winner, in an 8-7 victory over Oberlin College. The tally pushed the junior to 141 career goals, edging the previous program record of 140, set by Evan Bliss throughout the 1997-2000 seasons.

The Owls needed all three goals from Chintala in the tightly-contested North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) battle, as he scored the game-winner early in the fourth quarter and the defense held on with help from Adam Hall, who turned in a career-high night in cage.

Chintala's first two goals to tie the record came within the first minute of the game and gave Kenyon a 2-0 lead. Oberlin came right back, though, answering with three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes.

In the second, the Owls scored the only two goals of the frame to take a 4-3 lead to halftime. Gavin Gumucio netted his 22nd goal of the season at 11:22, while Rollins Heath lit the lamp with 5:08 in the half. Hall faced nine shots in the second and five on goal, but the senior keeper stifled all of them to keep his team ahead.

The third quarter proved to be the most action-packed of the night, as the two teams combined for seven goals. The Yeomen tallied three straight in the first five minutes of the quarter to equal the biggest advantage of the night, taking their second lead of the game at 6-4 with 10:24 remaining.

Kenyon's man-up unit responded with two straight goals on separate penalties to tie the contest. Heath hurled in his second goal of the game and Mike Kapral scored the latter, both assisted by Cameron Longway on a unit that went 3-for-6 (50 percent) for the game.

Oberlin scored less than a minute later to regain the lead, but Tanner Lewis found twine with 21 seconds in the third to set up a 7-7 tie heading into the fourth quarter.

The record-breaking tally for Chintala came at 10:27 in the fourth, a man-up rocket assisted by Heath. The goal was not only the record breaker, beating a mark which has stood for 25 seasons, but it also proved to be the game winner for the Owls, who bent but did not break for the rest of the game.

The Yeomen tried desperately to net the equalizer, out-shooting the Owls 16-7 in the fourth, but seven saves from Hall, including two in the final 100 seconds, made sure that didn't happen.

For the game, Hall hauled in 25 saves, which smashed his previous career best of 20 set one season ago. Chintala led the offense with four points on three goals and an assist, while Heath added three points of his own. Thomas Nelson turned in a 9-of-18 (50 percent) mark on the faceoff dot and added a team high five ground balls.

Kenyon's record improves to 9-3 on the season and 4-0 in the NCAC. The Owls return to the field on Saturday, April 12 at 1:00 pm to take on The College of Wooster and celebrate senior day.
