Kenyon climbs to second after NCAA round two

VICTOR, N.Y. – Braving the elements throughout the day, the Kenyon College men's golf team battled through the second round of the NCAA Division III Championships on Wednesday at Cobblestone Creek Country Club looking to make the cut and advance to the final two rounds.

The Owls fired the second best round of the day of the 43 team field, shooting 12 over par and climbing to a tie for second place at +21, safely advancing to Thursday and Friday's competition and looking to contend for the title.

Jaiden Koonar and Jonathan Oakes led the team for the rainy round, each posting scores of two over par (74). Both starting on the 12th hole, Koonar made a three over par score after nine. His second set of holes was where he shined, making a team high four birdies to end up at even par for the nine and two over on the day.

Oakes made one birdie in his first nine holes en route to a one over 36, and matched it on the back nine with two birdies and three bogeys. Oakes moved up two spots to eighth on the individual leaderboard, while Koonar shot 29 spots up the chart to 24th.

Oliver McGovern and Armand Ouellette were up next for Kenyon, rounding out the eligible team scores with a pair of 76s (+4). McGovern bounced back from a triple on his opening 13th hole and a double on the second nine with 15 pars and one birdie to shoot 76, keeping him at a tie for seventh overall with 24 pars through two rounds.

Starting on the 14th hole, Ouellette made three birdies in his second round, good enough for second most on the team, to post his four over score.

Adrian Jordan rounded out the Owls quintet, shooting a 40 on both his first and second nines to shoot 80 on the day.

For the tournament, Oakes leads the team with a +2 score, Koonar is second with +5, McGovern trails by one at +6, and Ouellette and Jordan are not far behind at +12.

Illinois Wesleyan maintained its first place position but now leads by just two strokes at +19. Kenyon and Huntingdon sit at +21, while Carnegie Mellon is one back at 22 over.

The third and fourth rounds of the 2025 NCAA Division III Championships will both be played at Midvale Country Club. Round three will begin on Thursday, May 22 at 9:00 a.m. Kenyon's first tee time is set for 10:39 a.m.
