Owls slide in third round, remain among top 10

PENFIELD, N.Y. -- Soggy conditions continued to play a role Thursday and facilitated a bit of a slide for the Kenyon College Owls, who moved to ninth place at the conclusion of the third round of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship.

Kenyon came into the round tied for second place in a field that started with 43 teams, but the Owls had trouble deciphering a drenched course at Midvale Country Club and posted a third-round team score of 305, after carding a 297 Tuesday and a 300 Wednesday.

The threat of bad weather is on tap for Friday's final round, as well, so the Championship Committee decided that all golfers should play as many holes as possible Thursday, including starting the fourth round. The remaining holes will be played out Friday, weather permitting, beginning at 7:45 a.m.

Throughout the third round, Kenyon was led by first-year Adrian Jordan and sophomore Oliver McGovern. They both fired rounds of three-over-par 75. Jordan remained steady with four bogeys and a birdie, while McGovern took a different approach, recording three bogeys, two double-bogeys, and a team-best four birdies.

Sophomore Jaiden Koonar was just one shot back of Jordan and McGovern, putting up a four-over-par 76. He had two bogeys on the front nine and then three on the back nine, with one being offset by a birdie.

Senior Armand Ouellette and sophomore Jonathan Oakes rounded out Kenyon's day-three scoring with a pair of 79s. They, like the rest of the team, found trouble on the back nine. As a team, the Owls were just five-over on the front nine, but 12-over on the back nine.

As the day wore on, the Owls were able to complete a good chunk of the fourth-round front nine before play was suspended due to darkness.

Prior to playing the extra holes, Koonar, Oakes, and McGovern all shared the same three-round score of 225, which was nine over par and put the Kenyon trio in a tie for 44th place among the 225 participating golfers.

The Owls, who were just two shots off the lead coming into the day, found themselves 17 strokes back of first-place Illinois Wesleyan University at the end of round three. Emory University jumped up to second place and Methodist University moved into third place.

One season ago, Kenyon tied for eighth place at the NCAA Championship. With a little more than half a round to go, the Owls will try to reach, or better, that placement tomorrow morning.
