No. 21 Knights deal Owls season-opening loss

GENESEO, N.Y. -- The No. 21-ranked SUNY Geneseo Knights scored the first goal of the game Saturday afternoon and then finished with a trio of goals in the fourth quarter to deal the Kenyon College field hockey team a 5-1 defeat in what was the season-opening game for the Owls.

The Knights (2-0) came out swinging and threw 10 shots at Kenyon within the first 15 minutes of play. That 10th shot, which was a penalty stroke, came off the stick of Ella Greico and got by Kenyon's goalkeeper Sophia Chaves. Chaves started the game and played the first half for the Owls. She allowed just that one goal to the Knights and she made 11 saves.

Still in the game and trailing by just one goal, the Kenyon team decided to get a look at first-year goalkeeper Lucy Baker. The Knights, again, peppered the Kenyon cage with four shots in the first three minutes of the second half, and Greico, again, scored on a penalty stroke to push SUNY Geneseo ahead 2-0.

Before the third quarter came to a close, Kenyon scored its lone goal of the game. Working off a penalty corner, Maren Lawrence, who was assisted by Zady Hasse, fired one home for the Owls. That Kenyon tally came with about 16 minutes left in the game and pulled the margin back down to one.

In the fourth, the Knights, who out-shot Kenyon, 36-4, for the game, finished with a flurry of three goals to break things open. Sam Lewis and Greico scored within the quarter's first three minutes and Emma Landers tacked on the game's final goal with about six minutes remaining.

Baker's 30 minutes of work in front of the Kenyon cage included 10 saves.

The road ahead doesn't get any easier for the Owls (0-1). The Kenyon squad will make a short trip north and take on No. 25-ranked University of Rochester at noon on Sunday.
