Owls place 10th in first-ever collegiate competition

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Competing in its first-ever NCAA Division III competition, Kenyon College's brand new women's golf program posted a respectable 10th-place finish among 13 teams at Denison University's two-day, two-round Lynn Schweizer Invitational.

The Owls finished the event, held at Denison Golf Club, with a team score of 695. In the final standings, that topped the scores of teams from Muskingum University, Allegheny College, and The College of Wooster.

Individually, the Owls were led by first-year Sasha Belova. She started out four-over-par in Saturday's first nine and then finished even through the second nine. Her score of 77 in the first round put her in a tie for eighth place in the field of 72 golfers.

On Sunday, Belova was three-over on the front nine and five-over on the back, which gave her a score of 80. Her overall tournament total of 157 strokes finalized her placement in a tie for 14th place with two others at plus-12 for the tournament.

Kenyon's next best was first-year Jane Fanning. She fired an 86 on Saturday and came back with an 84 on Sunday. Her final total of plus-25 put her in a three-way tie for 38th place. Her classmate, Camryn Nelson, wasn't too far off that pace. She logged scores of 87 and 90 for a final total of 177, which placed her in a three-way tie for 52nd place.

The Owls' final scoring golfer was first-year Macy Printy, who tied for 64th place with a total score of 191 on rounds of 101 and 90.

Senior Molly Haag was in the lineup for the Owls, too. She, like Printy, made vast improvements from day one to day two. Haag put up a 120 on Saturday and lowered that to a 105 on Sunday.

In the final team standings, Randolph-Macon College took the tournament title with a score of 599, which was just 15-over-par. Host Denison was second with a team score of 625, and DePauw University was third with a score of 631.
