Kenyon stopped by Bryn Mawr in battle of the Owls

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Before diving into the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) schedule for the rest of the season, the Kenyon College field hockey team took on Bryn Mawr college on Sunday afternoon for a battle of the Owls.

Kenyon's offense couldn't quite get going for the game and the defense did its best to contend with the high-powered Bryn Mawr attack, but conceded two second-half goals which proved to be the game's only scores, falling 2-0 after 60 minutes.

Owls' starting keeper Lucy Baker kept her team in the contest throughout, facing 24 shots with 14 on goal, turning away 13 for a new career high. In the opening quarter, Kenyon lost the shot edge 8-0 and the corner battle 6-0. Baker made four saves through the first 15 minutes to keep the score at 0-0.

Casey Master fired the team's best chance of the first half with 33 seconds in the second, but it was turned away to keep the score at zero at halftime. Baker was required to make just one save in the second quarter, as the Owls back line of Olivia Wangerow, Gigi Johnson and Ada Wigfield put a stop on the early offensive barrage.

In the third, Bryn Mawr broke through for two goals, which proved to be the difference makers. Maren Lawrence and Johnson each fired shots but each sailed wide. Baker added to her big day with one more save in the third.

The host Owls fired 10 more shots in the fourth and held the visiting Owls to none, cementing Bryn Mawr's 2-0 victory.

Kenyon already picked up its first NCAC victory of the season against Oberlin, but will begin the rest of the slate on Saturday, September 27 against Transylvania University at 11:00 a.m. on the road.
