No. 14 Tigers use final quarter to get past Owls

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- For the majority of the first three quarters of play Saturday, the Kenyon College football team didn't let No. 14-ranked DePauw University build more than a one-touchdown lead. Over the final 15 minutes of play, however, the host Tigers outscored the Owls, 14-0, en route to a 35-14 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) triumph.

Kenyon (0-3, 0-1 NCAC) got off to the start that it wanted, opening the game on enemy turf with a 13-play, 87-yard scoring drive that spanned almost seven minutes. First-year quarterback Ryan Dean completed seven passes during the drive, with the big play being a 30-yard pass to Brendan Comerford. Three plays later, Dean rolled to his right and found Dylan Carlquist in the back corner of the end zone for a 7-0 Kenyon lead.

DePauw (3-0, 1-0 NCAC), the four-time defending conference champion, had an answer. The Tigers took their opening drive 65 yards over six plays and watched Carson Johnson knot the game up with a touchdown run from nine yards out.

In the second quarter, all three Kenyon drives ended with punts. The DePauw offense didn't fare much better, punting twice and losing possession on a fumble. Just before the half, though, the Tigers, facing a 4th-and-6, managed a 40-yard touchdown toss from back-up quarterback Anthony Garzolini to Lleyton Lukowski to take a seven-point lead into the break.

Lukowski struck again in the third quarter. With 9:07 on the clock, he hauled in a 17-yard scoring strike, this time from starting quarterback Scott Ballentine. Roughly seven minutes after that, Kenyon pulled back within seven points. Working off a DePauw turnover, the Owls went 39 yards in seven plays with Dean hitting Comerford for a seven-yard score that closed Kenyon's gap to 21-14 heading into the final quarter.

DePauw used its experience and poise to take over the game in those final 15 minutes. Ballentine ran for one touchdown and threw for one more to put the game out of reach for the Owls. Meanwhile, Kenyon's four series in the fourth ended with three punts and one interception.

Dean finished the game for Kenyon going 21-of-39 for 186 yards, two touchdowns, and one pick. Comerford was his top target. The junior receiver hauled in nine catches for 65 yards and that third-quarter touchdown. On the ground, senior Jordon Benjamin paced the Owls with 60 yards on 21 carries.

On the other side of the ball, Ballentine and Lukowski were the difference-makers for DePauw. Ballentine went 28-of-38 for 332 yards and the two touchdowns to Lukowski, who finished with 10 catches for 136 yards. Like Kenyon, the Tigers couldn't get much going on the ground. Caden Whitehead was their leading rusher and he had 45 yards on 16 attempts.

Although it may not be much of a consolation for the Owls, Saturday's result was a major improvement over a 65-0 loss to DePauw one season ago. The team will now return to Gambier and get ready for its Homecoming contest against John Carroll University (2-1, 1-0 NCAC).
