Owls drop doubleheader to Scots, Dutch

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – After tipping off the first of three games for the weekend last night, the Kenyon College volleyball team took on Monmouth College and Central College on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader.

Although the Owls pushed the Scots to five sets in the first match, the team could not seal the deal, falling 3-2 in the opening match and dropping the second match to the Dutch 3-0.

The opener was a back and forth affair and marked just the third match of the season which went to five sets for the Owls. Monmouth grabbed an early lead in the first game and never surrendered it past the 7-6 Scots advantage. Kenyon opened the match with a -.025 hitting percentage with eight kills and nine attack errors, but quickly responded in the second with one of its best stretches of the season.

Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese fired three out of four kills to start the second set, helping the Owls build an 8-5 lead. With help from Sophia Menke and Olivia Gumz with two kills apiece, Keynon amassed a .242 hitting percentage with eleven kills and three errors to even up the match at one.

Monmouth took a 2-1 lead with a 25-13 winner in the third set, but with its back against a wall Kenyon played its best volleyball of the match. The Owls had a game high 21 kills in the fourth set and hit .288, a team best. Kenyon led for most of the set, but the Scots evened it up when it mattered, sending the game into extra points. Rumpca-Veronese and Gumz each combined for one kill apiece to rip a 3-0 run to take the set 28-25 and send the game into a 15-point fifth set.

The Owls gave up three separate runs in the fifth that proved to be the difference. A 4-0 run early on tied the set at five, while a 3-0 run soon after gave the Scots their first lead. After taking a 13-11 lead and nearly capturing the win, another 4-0 Monmouth run gave the team the set and match victories. In the first game, Rumpca-Veronese led the team with 23 kills, while Menke chipped in with 12 and Gumz added 11. As a team, Kenyon hit .175 and tallied 57 kills.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Kenyon was not as efficient hitting but still managed to keep each game extremely close against Central. The teams were deadlocked at 12 to start the opener, with Menke leading the way for the Owls with three kills. Each team was deadlocked at 19 down the stretch, but the Dutch were able to pull away for the opening winner. Both squads hit .105, but a two-kill edge for Central put them ahead early.

The second set was the Owls' weakest of the match in terms of kills (6), but the team still hung around and threatened to take the game. Kenyon ripped off a 3-0 run and two 4-0 runs during the third, but it wasn't enough to stop a Central offense which hit .250 for the set and totaled 16 kills. The Dutch eventually took the third set and the match.

For the game, Gumz led the team with five kills while Menke and Aura Barinas each had five. Juliette Tomamichel headlined the defense efforts with three solo blocks, while as a team Kenyon hit .093 and had 16 kills.

The Owls will head back to Ohio and will be back on the court on Tuesday, September 23 at 7:00 p.m. to face off against Otterbein College on the road.
